We had the good fortune of connecting with Yadira Orosco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yadira, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had to do lots of research. I have no experience in opening a business and no clue where to start. I had to do alot of research and ask friends and family for help or their opinion. Even now I am still learning and listening to opinions to make my small business work. It does take time and patience to try to get out there and show the people your business and what you offer. I’m still learning today what works, what do people want, and what they don’t like.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do flower arrangements. I love flowers I always have. However, we all know they can be expensive. I do understand you must make a profit but I do believe in putting a reasonable price to sell to your clients and also making a profit too. Some of the big flower shops sell for double a normal price. I try my best to sell unique flower arrangements at a reasonable price so people can afford to buy some just because or to give to someone else. I mean who doesn’t love flowers? It has been very difficult to start a business. Had no clue where to start. Thankfully nowadays everyone does the pop-up events and I started there. I met some nice people who helped me guide me how to do pop-up events and from there I have been able to meet clients/customers. I started my business in March and I have learned alot. I’m hoping to one day open a small flower shop in Pasadena, Texas not too far from home. I believe I can get more people to stop by and see what I have to offer than online. It’s more difficult especially since not everyone uses social media. I still have a long way to go and more to learn but I am trying everyday. I also have a full time job, a cat, dog, and a man at home. So my life is always busy. I honestly started doing this for my mom. My mother passed away in February due to some health issues she had and she lived with me. I can say she was like a daughter and best friend since we would spend everyday together, I took her everywhere, we went shopping, out to eat, to the doctor, and at home watch movies together. She was happy and making me laugh. I missed her alot and didn’t know how to deal with the pain and loss and had alot of free time now. My mother loved her roses, gardenias, and sunflowers and made me think of doing flowers to help bring some happiness to people. I haven’t done any ceremonies or wedding flowers but I’ll hope to learn and get there soon.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to try new places when I go out with my friends. Usually there is a pop-up event going on every weekend I would start there. There’s so many things being sold there like food, desserts, snacks, corn, candies, and of course clothes, candles, glitter cups, croc charms, etc. They have some pop-up in Pasadena, Texas, Pearland, Texas, and in downtown Houston. I’ve actually been out to Chappell Hill, Texas where they had a huge pop-up event and had so many things to buy and had a variety of food to choose from. I have also heard of this new place in downtown that is full of food vendors I would love to go there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Lexis Olmos from The Clay Cutties Instagram: the.claycuties
She is very nice, friendly, giving me advice, or her opinion of the flowers or products I should do. She also does her own clay earrings that are cute and affordable. She has several options also.
Also Lex from scents.by_lex
She makes handmade candles and are beautiful to see and amazing to smell. She is my new candle girl. She is always sweet and sharing my post online, liking, commenting, etc. There is many more to thank. I’ve met many wonderful people when I do my pop-ups.
