Ideas aren’t everything, execution matters greatly, but starting often requires an idea and so we asked folks to think back and tell us the story of how they came up with the idea for their businesses. We’ve highlighted some of our favorite stories below.

Jessica Lopez | Boudoir Photographer

Allura Boudoir was founded after overcoming my own insecurities as a woman. At that time, my 3rd child, Noelle, was just a couple of months old and I was struggling with my body image. I was photographing women’s beauty portraits and at the end of each session I would have my clients bring a piece of lingerie and get a couple of boudoir photos. In 2013, boudoir was not main stream and was a relatively new industry so there wasn’t a big demand for it, but it was always my favorite part of each session because that’s where I would see the magic happen. Brittany Donovan | Founder of Behold & Flourish

Behold & Flourish was in the making in 2018 and launched in 2019. I saw a need to create a gathering and to begin a community for women to gather in the heart of Houston — A place for women to celebrate the uniqueness of one another by embracing who we are in a world full of comparison. A destination where creativity, community & conversation have no limits! The idea came from the desire to continue gatherings outside of life events such as weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, birthday’s, etc. Why does the celebration have to stop there? There is ALWAYS something to celebrate! Read more>>

Medina Perine | Teaching Artist & Mama

The beginning stages of the pandemic really triggered the fear of not being able to teach Theater Arts. I have been in the teaching artist field for twelve years. I don’t desire to do anything but work with children or adults leading them in fun interactive exercises that build their social and self awareness. When thinking of a name for the business, I thought of Cesar Chavez qoute “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community… Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” Read more>>

Cindy Millsap | Co-owner of Country Dome Suites

We are dome nerds! We have been fascinated with the idea of building monolithic domes for years. James and Wayne have always wanted to build a dome for their own families, but that hasn’t happened yet, next best thing…build them for others to enjoy! Cindy has also always wanted to own a bed and breakfast. So what did we do? We combined the dreams and created a unique boutique hotel, Country Dome Suites. Read more>>

Saundra Gilliard | Story based social advocate & Personal Development Coach, Speaker and Trainer

I did not come up with this idea for my business, it came to me. It developed from my love for stories and my passion for promoting equality for women. When I was in college, I came across the works of Zora Neale Hurston. I fell in love with the beauty of the voice she gave women. About 25 years ago, I became a professional storyteller as a side hustle. As I studied the art and science of storytelling, I discovered the power inherit in crafting a narrative and speaking it to power. I spent more than 15 years casually using story as a framework to help women reimagine themselves in the male dominate narratives. Then it suddenly came to me that I could use the story framework as a strategy for social change. Femininely Free! uses story-based analysis and strategies to shift social perspectives about woman. Ben Snow | Entrepreneur

Orbit was founded in March 2020, just as COVID-19 began to change life as we knew it. I was home from Spring Break during my Junior year of college and the reality of not returning back to school for the remainder of the semester was beginning to sink in. I was back in my childhood home, separated from all of my college friends and extended family. I found myself speaking almost every day to my longtime best friend and creative collaborator for both peace of mind and to keep my brain stimulated in a dark time. Read more>>
