‘Think positively’ is a piece of advice often provided to those in distress from loved ones with the most benevolent of intentions. This pop psychology notion suggests that it’s easy to turn your mind toward a better perspective. If only it were that simple! It is absolutely normal to have a range of emotions and experiences in life, and even within a day; this is what makes us human. This advice can backfire when we try to apply a positive perspective as it may be too far from the original thought, and therefore not believable. That the staple of being a successful, happy individual is to finish high school, go to college, get a good paying job, work for someone else for 50 years only to retire with a pension & a pen for your years of service!
