We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Courtney had started an event company and felt very limited as to what she could rent for her clients here in Houston. So she approached me about a collaboration. She knew how much I liked treasure hunting and finding unique pieces. Ironically, my husband, Andrew, liked to do woodworking. Courtney provided great design ideas in the beginning from inspirational images she would find on Pinterest.  And then, Andrew would build her dream props. From those initial build outs for Courtney, we started a party rental company and expanded our inventory through treasure hunting and creative adventures. We love partnering with one another, taking trips to Round Top and bringing unique finds to the Houston events scene.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We love working with clients to provide custom solutions for their events. We are more than happy to paint, wallpaper or customize a bar or party prop. If we don’t have something, we will build, buy or borrow it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely the Heights! We love this little tiki bar called Lei Low. They have the best cocktails, served in fun glasses – and the people watching is awesome. I take everyone who comes to town for Mexican food and margaritas. I love the taco dives in the Heights. Chinatown and Harvin are faves as well as the hike & bike paths all over Houston. Memorial Park, McGovern Centennial Gardens and the Arboretums are lovely, and the Rothko Chapel is super cool.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey has been enhanced by the experience and support provided by my business partner, Courtney Paddock. We’ve been close friends since the 7th grade – oldies and goodies – and honestly our working relationship is what corporate dreams are made of. Courtney’s business is a few years more mature than Goodie, so we get the benefit of her knowledge base, successes and mistakes and her business acumen. She’s been a mentor and cheerleader throughout the years and we have a ton of fun!
