Meet Emely Cortez | Brow Artist & Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emely Cortez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emely, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As a single mom of 2 I had to make sacrifices, which meant spending less time with my kids. I worked a 9-5 Mon-Fri and weekends I worked on taking clients for my business. So working 7 days straight I rarely had time for anything including my kids. After a lot of prayer and thought I finally took the plunge and quit where I was able to take my business full time. The first year I noticed I had more time on my hands to really put in the work my business really needed but most importantly my kids saw me more I get to pick up my kids from school and they had more of me. I’m now able to close out my schedule when I need some “ME” time. As a business owner you need to step back sometimes and take a break to regroup and reset.You can’t be great if you’re not in a peaceful state of mind and your business can’t succeed if you’re constantly drained and have no motivation or peace.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart is just who I am as a person. Wanting to help others and truly change someone’s life with their brows. I hope that my work speaks for itself and staying humble all while doing it. Creating a brow isn’t just drawing on a person it’s literally art.. It’s the vision you have for your canvas, planning out what you’re going to do, what pattern, what technique will fit the person and what is going to enhance their beauty. It’s such a detailed process but the end result is so worth it and beautiful. That’s what I love about it so much is the artistry in itself and how it continues to evolve..When I started in this industry it was hard, one thing I struggled with and I tell my students now is I always compared myself to other artist that have been in the industry longer than I have.I wanted to be as good as them but I had to learn that everyone is on their own journey and they had their struggles and silent battles that I know nothing about bc Im seeing the surface of the success. So I learned to grow in my own journey and celebrate the milestones. The goal is to continue to grow my name and my skill set but also to help other women, inspire and uplift them to want to become a better version of themselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t g out much but def Astros game for sure any sports event in Houston is an event in itself.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost GOD for sure.. I don’t think I could’ve gotten this far in my journey if it wasn’t for GOD! I can’t even explain all the struggles I have gone through this far and soley relied on my faith. Secondly, my mom and kids, my mom continues to be there for me always like she never gives up on me, she has been there to pick me up when i felt down and wiped away my tears, im very thankful to have her.I have to make her and my kids proud and show them that I have created something for them to one day inspire them to reach for their dreams no matter the obstacle in front. Lastly, my boyfriend he is that shoulder to lean on, the person I vent to, and the person who continues to cheer me on, uplift me, and pray for me. He’s there everyday with no complaints, he definitely helps to keep me sane in my journey.
