We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Walker-Craig and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
The habits that I find most helpful are time management, not being afraid to fail, not being afraid of rejection, always developing a Plan A, B & C along with finding time to destress and not allow entrepreneurship take a toll on my mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. I also make it a daily habit after I meditate each morning to speak positive affirmations to myself in the mirror. I AM GREAT! I WILL SUCCEED! I AM A GODDESS! I WILL HAVE A POSITIVE AND PRODUCTIVE DAY! I WILL BE HAPPY AND NOT ALLOW NEGATIVITY TO STEAL MY JOY!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Business-wise, a combination of being surrounded by what I like to call go-getters (hustling entrepreneurs) growing up, seeking an education that aligned with my specialities, gaining experience and hard work & dedication is how I am in the place that I am today. It was not by far easy and have had many people tell me that I make it look easy. I manage my time well and seek the projects that truly fuels my passion to educate and heal the community. There are many challenges that I have experienced throughout my career such as loosing my restaurant to the Hurricane Harvey devastation, being unemployed twice unexpectedly, not having applicable funding to support my dreams, becoming addicted to drugs and had to go to rehab for assistance are just a few obstacles that could have prevented me from fulfilling my dreams and goals but I did not allow those things to hold me back from what was rightfully destined for me by the universe. The lesson that I learned is to never give up! When you notice that things are not going the way that you may have planned, do not get discourage and keep fighting because after every thunderstorm comes sunshine! My brand is simply healing and educating! I had past health issues (Type II Diabetes, Mental Health Diagnosis, IBS, etc.) that I was able to reverse through nutrition and want to be an advocate in helping others achieve optimal health. I am a Co-Founder & COO for Femme & Flora – a nonprofit aiming to improve body literacy and uterine health outcomes through service, education and advocacy. I am also the Co-Founder of Leve Sea Moss – a virtual health food store supplying various sea moss products as an alternative to providing the body with applicable nutrients. Anything that I can do to educate the masses is right up my alley!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is great for restaurants (plant-based in my case), museums, parks, live music venues, etc. which are things that my friends love to do but we are all from Houston. However, I would take my best friend to Rio de Janiero, Brazil to view the most amazing beach views which is our favorite activity. After meditating and doing yoga on the beach next to our crystals, we would indulge in a wholesome plant-based meal. We would spend each day completing a different excursion from viewing landmarks, farmer’s market shopping, riding a bike up the coast, indulging in a dance lesson, going out to dance the night away, a spa day overlooking the country’s scenery and wrapping up the trip with a quiet relaxing day filled with journaling and regrouping to prepare to enter back to the “real world.” Anything involving culture and food are our go-tos because we are licensed chefs who actually met while we were in culinary arts school. We love being around diversity and learning anything new to increase our comprehension of the native lands.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person that has inspired me the most in my life is my maternal grandfather, Sam Turner. He instilled in me at an early age that I was already a legend and destined for greatness. He passed away the day after my 15th birthday but I still feel his presence tremendously and especially after each accomplishment that I achieve. He dropped out of school in middle school, went to the military serving in both the Army and Navy to later become a janitor working 3 jobs in the heat of the segregation movement in the 1960’s. He was promoted to a management position and as the first Black individual to possess a leadership role. At the time, the name of the corporation was Gulf State which later became Entergy Texas. He was tortured, talked about and abused in ways that was inhumane and reflects what we as BIPOC experience still to this day with racism just because of the color of our skin. Any time that I feel down or negative, I feel his energy around me. He fought so hard to provide me with the opportunities that I have today so it is my duty to honor him. His presence and life on this earth is the driving force that allows me to keep fighting to finish what he started which is building generational wealth and breaking toxic cycles.
