We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorena Burch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lorena, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am a risk taking queen – which is hard for a lot of people to understand. When I have something in my mind and I see the end goal, I just start heading that direction by putting one foot in front of the other, one decision at a time, one step at a time. Most people are afraid of risks because they don’t want to fail or they don’t have an exact plan. I see it as an opportunity to learn and grow as a person. I’ve started two companies by taking risks, even when people around me didn’t necessarily support me, I know that if I don’t try, the regret would always remain with me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am where I am today because of others who believed in me, hard work and dedication to never giving up. I am a first generation college graduate, who is now the Vice President of a Los Angeles based Television Production Company and the owner of two local Houston businesses. i started my career in 1997 at The Walt Disney Co in the mailroom and worked my way up the corporate ladder. I held several positions along the way until I landed a job as a production coordinator working with the Muppets. That is when my passion for producing TV was born. After 15 years of working at Disney, I decided to go back to school and earned my degree at age 35 – getting married and having a baby along the way. I graduated cum laude from The University of Denver with a degree in Media Studies and Communication and a minor in Law and Society. I went back to work in tv as a freelancer working on shows like Top Chef, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, documentaries and later, live music shows like Jingle Ball and Fiesta Latina. This path lead me to my current company where I am now the VP of Production and Studio Operations. I believe that when you show up everyday, have passion and dedication, people naturally want to be around you and work with you. Perhaps the journey may seem smooth and seamless but I had many doors slammed in my face. I have never allowed any obstacles stand in my way. Particularly as a women in television when hours are long, you’re working 7 days a week, or the job takes you on the road for months at a time… people would overlook me assuming I couldn’t handle it being a wife, and mom of 3 boys. But that’s where my family would step in and tell me, you go get that and we got your back on the rest. I owe a lot to my husband and my mom who always supported my wild and crazy dreas… and sometimes those sacrifices are worth it and they pay off in the end.
