We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Aguilar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Monterrey, Mexico and I was raised in Houston since I was six years old. My Mexican culture influenced a lot of my artistic side mainly because our world revolved around Telenovelas, or soap operas. I remember gathering around with my cousins and interpreting and mimicking the actors we saw every day on T.V!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an actor! I enjoy portraying different characters simply because I love telling stories in different ways. Acting is a form of art that involves emotional facility, physical movement and facial expressions. And I enjoy doing all of that.
It’s been about three years since I began my acting journey and along the way I have learned that having an acting coach is extremely important. Acting is like a muscle, and you have to consistently be training and getting better at it, doing this will raise your chances of booking the role. It’s definitely not easy, in the beginning, I found to be comparing myself to other actors and being a little too hard on myself when I didn’t book certain projects. The way I overcame these challenges is I had to practice that being hard on myself would not get me anywhere and that I was unique in my own way. Loving yourself and knowing your value is what sets you apart. It’s okay if you fail or don’t get the part. There is ALWAYS someone that is going to believe in your talent and put you in their next film.
I have been fortunate to play a different broad range of characters from a spoiled rich girl to an immigrant crossing the southern border. There is no rule as to what characters you can play, as long as you fit the part. I have also been in several commercials and ads as well as short films. My short-term goal now is to sign with an agency and continue to keep building my resume and spreading knowledge about acting to someone that wants to start doing it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston has sooo many great spots. If I had a friend over, I would take them to my favorite Indian restaurant, Kathmandu. Then I would take them to my favorite movie theatre, which is, The Alamo in La Centerra. But you really can’t forget about the The Post Houston in Downtown. It’s also one of my favorites, and you get a great view of the skyscrapers as well. Chinatown is one of my favorites too. The Karaoke spots there are super fun, and the food is so good!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jesus deserves all the Glory! As well as all the people He has placed along my path to continue pushing me forward. There are so many people that I couldn’t just name one person. My parents and best friends, the acting coaches I have had. To name a few are Wendy Alane Wright, Next Actor Acting Studio in Houston, James Ciccone, and Houde School of Acting. What is most important is the Houston Film making community and Actors. There is so much talent in this city and acting friends that I have met along the way that keep inspiring me along the way.
