We had the good fortune of connecting with Renisha Freeman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renisha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve watched my husband own and operate barber and beauty salons over the years so I knew some of the highs and lows of business. When it came to being a therapist, I always knew I wanted to have my own private practice. I heard horror stories of licensed therapist who worked for agencies and were treated unfairly. I wanted to offer a “safe space” for my clients to open up and be themselves. My confirmation to have my own practice came during my internship at Enlightened Psychotherapy. I started saving pictures of how I wanted my office to look BEFORE I even knew where it would be. My husband and I visited office spaces and after visiting one in particular, I knew it was time! It was and continues to be a step of faith journey for me that I am enjoying so far!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In my heart, I am an encourager. I find joy in helping people be better versions of themselves than they were the day before. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I get to that on a daily basis. I am most proud to be the owner of From Hurt to Healed Counseling and Wellness. I got to place where I am currently in business by taking it one day at a time. I have built my clientele through advertising on several psychology directories online as well as the referral of friends and family. Two lessons I have learned along the way is 1. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Your purpose is YOUR purpose! 2. Give! You cannot be expect to be blessed in business if you are never willing to give. That means your time, your resources, and your talents. I want the world to know that From Hurt to Healed is not just about counseling but it’s about the whole person; mind, body, and spirit. It is my goal to help individuals go from a hurt place to a place of healing and restoration in their life!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a pretty simple, lowkey type of girl. I love brunch, spa days, museums, live music and sports! Some of my favorite brunch spots are The Breakfast Klub, Snooze, and The Toasted Yolk. My best friend says I love anywhere with Shrimp and Grits on the menu! LOL (She’s right!) I also love the live music at Scott Gertner’s Rhythm Room. And consider myself a member of RED NATION because I’m a die-hard Rockets fan. I also cheer on the Texans and Astros.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been my number one supporter throughout our marriage but especially on this journey as a private practice owner. He listens to my joys and my fears and is always encouraging me to GO FOR IT! His saying is “people can tell you yes or no but you’ll never know if you never ask!” My internship supervisor who is know my mentor, Dr. Cheryl Ivory. She pushed me out of my comfort zone as a young therapist and is always a phone call away to advise me on various matters. I’m forever grateful for her!
