We had the good fortune of connecting with Schelo Doirin Collier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Schelo, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I like to tell people I was an accidental Entrepreneur. I actually started my business as a Facebook Group, as I was in search of making like-minded friends. This group developed into a business simply because I wanted to answer the needs of my community. I continue to listen to my community’s needs and grow the community as a result.
What should our readers know about your business?
Black Women Invest is more than just a financial literacy platform; it’s a vibrant community fostering financial independence for Black women. What sets us apart is our unwavering focus on both education and community. We provide a safe space for women to learn about investing, from the basics of stocks and real estate to navigating complex financial landscapes. But financial literacy is just one piece of the puzzle. We foster a powerful sisterhood where members can share experiences, celebrate wins, and build a supportive network that propels them forward.
This journey wasn’t easy. In fact I’m sure there are still many lessons to learn! I believe we got to where we are because of God and by identifying opportunities. It’s not secret that there is a lack of resources and representation in the financial world for Black Women, we built Black Women Invest to address that problem. Starting this business has taught me the importance of identifying a problem and consistently creating solutions for it.
The most rewarding aspect? Witnessing the transformation of our members. Seeing them gain confidence, develop financial goals, and achieve milestones is what truly excites us. Every story of success fuels our passion to continue our work.
I believe one of the biggest lessons learned is the power of community. Black women supporting Black women is a force multiplier. We want the world to know that Black Women Invest is more than a business; it’s a movement. We’re here to shatter stereotypes, dismantle financial barriers, and empower a generation of Black women to build wealth and design their dream futures.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to a Black Women Invest Houston Chapter meetup! It is ALWAYS a good time! We hang out together, typically grab a drink or brunch, and learn from an industry expert every month.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out my husband Rob. When I first called him to share that the name “Black Women Invest” came to me, he immediately encouraged me to get it started! I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for his continuous support.
