We had the good fortune of connecting with Dexter Pierce Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dexter, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since i was young i always knew how to work a crowd’s attention. That led me to understanding that my creativity is an actual job/career path. I was sold.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Directing, writing, editing, producing and sometimes you”ll find me acting on camera. I love to create art in the afrosurealism realm. The world feels familiar to use but from a different perspective. I love to reel audiences in one way but twist them in a totally different direction.
I got to where i am by working under in demand professionals. Watching and taking notes on how they take care of business. It wasn’t easy getting there but it is staying because I love what i do. It’s the outside world that challenges it. I focus on what i can control
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If there’s anyone to recognize or acknowledge it would be my loving mother Judy Pierce. Encouraging me to believe and I shall receive. My supportive sister and #1 fan Danielle Pierce for always watching my projects. When we were kids we would act as if our lives were a televised show called Kate Cake.
Someone who deserves much recognition for my journey on the west coast is a late fraternity brother (Kappa Alpha Psi) Theodore Palmer. After college i got a one way ticket to California and he opened his home to me. Introduced the idea to pursue my MFA in film, which i did. It was a costly decision but the knowledge/ memories I have will last a lifetime.
