We had the good fortune of connecting with Renee Jefferson Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Renee, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The evolution of SaraDonna Designs stemmed from the belief that if I were going to commit my time to something as risky as entrepreneurship, it should be something I love. After running for Houston City Council, I decided not to reopen my Medical Spa. Instead, I chose to focus on something that brought me personal gratification, positively impacted others, and could still make a significant difference. That’s how SaraDonna Designs came to be.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart is my brand itself. I believe that God has crafted every person to be uniquely who they are, and it’s that belief that allowed me to break out of my shell and create a brand that speaks to the little girl in me. I wanted to pay homage to my mother and grandmother, who played such important roles in my life, while doing something I absolutely love. That’s why the name SaraDonna Designs means so much to me—it comes directly from them, and it fills me with pride and excitement for what lies ahead for my design firm.
In 2019, I ran for Houston City Council. While I’m still deeply rooted in politics, my true passion lies in transforming homes and restoring the lives of families. Entrepreneurship is not an easy journey, but I’ve remained committed to my craft, anchored by my faith, and enthusiastic about the future. Some of my most rewarding moments actually came from the hardest times in my life. I learned to look beyond what was right in front of me and focus on what’s ahead. My tenacity and perseverance have kept me in the fight.
Today, I’m designing multi-million-dollar homes, working on national projects, expanding my firm to include a renovation and remodeling projects, and launching my own pillow line. I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is truly a melting pot with so many amazing places to explore. Our cultural diversity and strong economy have really set the stage for growth. If I were entertaining, my first gesture would definitely be to cook. A lot of people don’t realize how much I love to cook—and I really can cook. I’m talking about homemade cornbread, mustard greens, macaroni and cheese, smothered chicken, yams, southern fried chicken, oxtails, lasagna, Parmesan chicken, and the best homemade peach cobbler.
I’m not into clubs, but we’d definitely hit the Galleria, roll down Almeda, check out some cool dessert spots in Chinatown, maybe take a trip to the Woodlands, and then finish the night with dinner at Potente back in the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I also want to recognize my incredible family—my amazing husband, beautiful children, and my parents, who have supported me throughout this journey.
