We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lex, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My loc journey began in 2022, and like many Black women, I’ve always loved expressing myself through different hairstyles. One of my biggest loc goals was to experiment with bold, sporadic colors. However, working in education meant I had to find alternative ways to express myself through my hair.

I’ve always loved wearing my hair up, but I struggled with tension headaches and breakage, which made it challenging to keep my styles in place for long periods. That’s when I discovered spiral hair ties on social media. At first, I tried the plastic spiral ties, but they didn’t provide the volume or hold I wanted. Then I came across bendable spiral ties, and everything changed. Their versatility allowed for so many different styles—ponytails, messy buns, headbands—you name it!

I’ve always had a mindset that if I see something I think I can do, I go for it. Around that time, I had also been praying for a creative outlet—something that would allow me to have fun, express myself, and serve others. That’s when the idea for my brand clicked. I wanted to create bold, statement-making spiral ties for people like me who love to stand out, while also solving the issue of choosing between comfort and style.

So, in the spring of 2023, Spiral Tingz was officially born!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Spiral Tingz offers handmade, versatile spiral ties designed specifically for locs, natural hair, and protective styles. My brand blends style, function, and cultural appreciation with bold, high-quality designs that allow people to express themselves without sacrificing comfort.

What excites me most is the unknown—I have no idea where this journey will take me, but I’m trusting God every step of the way. Entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy, especially while balancing a 9-to-5 job and being a college student. But through the challenges, I’ve learned the importance of enjoying the process, finding balance, and showing up for my business no matter what.

The biggest message I want to share is that we all have a gift that God has blessed us with, and it’s up to us to use that gift to serve and uplift those around us. Spiral Tingz is more than just a business—it’s a reflection of faith, creativity, and community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d make sure they experienced the best of what Houston has to offer!

Food & Drinks:
We’d kick off the mornings at The Breakfast Klub—because their wings and waffles are a must-try. For a mix of Latin flavor and great vibes, Gloria’s is the spot. And when we’re craving soul food, Mikki’s serves up some of the best comfort food in town.

Nature & Relaxation:
For a breath of fresh air, we’d spend time at Buffalo Bayou Park and Discovery Green—perfect for enjoying downtown views or just unwinding. If we’re in the mood for a beach day, Surfside Beach is the go-to. It may not have crystal-clear waters, but it’s way more peaceful and cleaner than Galveston.

Creativity & Art Appreciation:
For something unique, we’d explore the Cockrell Butterfly Museum and the Museum of Illusions—both are interactive and mesmerizing. The Museum of Fine Arts is a must for art lovers, and The Color Factory is a dream for anyone who loves immersive, playful art experiences.

Overall, it’d be a mix of great food, scenic spots, and creativity—showcasing the best of Houston’s culture!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I have to give all the glory and honor to God. I often joke that Spiral Tingz isn’t run by me—it’s the Holy Spirit working through me. He blessed me with this creative gift, and it’s only right that I use it to not only express myself but also bring others closer to Him through my art and faith. One verse that I live by is Matthew 5:16: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

I also want to recognize my amazing family, friends, and loyal supporters. Their encouragement, love, and belief in me mean the world, and I’m forever grateful for their presence on this journey.
