Meet Jennifer Watts

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Watts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I embarked on the journey of Noche Tejana with a singular objective in mind – to uplift and support Tejano, Conjunto, and Latina female artists. Through this platform, I aim to provide a spotlight for these incredible talents, showcasing their music and celebrating their vibrant cultural contributions. Noche Tejana is a space where their voices can resonate and their stories can be heard, bridging communities and honoring the rich heritage of Tejano and Conjunto music. Together, we can amplify the voices of these artists and ensure their unique artistry shines brightly for audiences to appreciate and enjoy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a trumpet artist who used to tour with a famous cumbia band. During my time on the road, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by female musicians in the industry. Determined to make a difference, I founded Noche Tejana, a platform that celebrates and supports women in music. Through Noche Tejana, we provide opportunities for female artists to showcase their talent, connect with industry professionals, and empower each other in a male-dominated field. I believe that by coming together and lifting each other up, we can create a more inclusive and equitable music community for all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Will my bestfriend loves pho, just like me so any good pho places in downtown Houston or Midtown. We would go to the Hobby Center for a musical, Houston Zoo, Miller Outdoor and Discovery Green.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Remembering attending Gracie Chavez music listening talks in Houston, where I highlighted the challenges facing Tejano Music in our city, especially for women in the industry. During one memorable music session, Ericka De Leon, also known as baby girl, “board member “movingly shared: “My dad was Motown and my mom was Selena. I gave you your flowers.” Encouraged by these words, I persevered in pursuing my goals, knowing that my voice was being heard. Through various discussions on music, film, and art, I gained the clarity I needed. After four years of dedication, I successfully introduced Noche Tejana at the House of Blues House of Blues Houston in Houston, showcasing both Tejano and Conjunto music. Thanks to relentless networking efforts and more insightful talks, I crossed paths with Elva Trevino, who helps you grow your business Claudia de Vasco, the director of the Miller Outdoor Theatre, and with divine guidance, I proudly presented Voces y Recuerdos Voces y Recuerdos
Never did I imagine that I could bring Tejano and Conjunto music to a prestigious venue like the House of Blues, but I did it with an all-female lineup, and the feeling was incredible. And then, to think that I would showcase Tejano music with an all-female lineup at the Miller Outdoor Theater, a place where such representation is rare, was beyond my wildest dreams. The Tejano music industry is undeniably male dominated, making it challenging for non-male artists, musicians, DJs, sounds, promoters or radio stations to be recognized or hired. Breaking through these barriers and proving that women deserve their place in this industry has been a rewarding journey, despite the obstacles faced along the way.”
“Women of Tejano” refers to the influential and resilient women who have played a significant role in shaping the Tejano culture and history. These women have made invaluable contributions to music, art, activism, and community building in the Tejano community. They have broken barriers, challenged stereotypes, and paved the way for future generations. Through their creativity, strength, and passion, the Women of Tejano continue to inspire and empower others to embrace their heritage and celebrate the rich diversity of Tejano culture. Their stories are a testament to the important role that women play in preserving and honoring the traditions of Tejano heritage.
As a trumpet player and trumpet artist for B.A.C. Musical Instruments “Best American Craftsmen” I now present to you a trumpet player who can showcase an all-female line up.
Yesterday’s show was a resounding success as we sold out and had over 3k in the audience.
