We had the good fortune of connecting with Rod Bryant and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rod, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
NETIV serves the global community by offering inclusive, interactive Torah education for non jews that transcends location, connects diverse learners, supports spiritual and ethical growth, and fosters a worldwide community centered on shared learning and reflection from ancient biblical text.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My professional journey has taken me through several worlds of service, each one shaping the next. I began my career as a Chaplain in the United States Army, serving during the Gulf War. After completing my military service, I spent 10 years as a Houston Police Officer, working in patrol, investigations, and as a member of the Hostage Negotiation Team.
I later became the Senior Pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship in Kingwood, Texas. During that time, I volunteered with the Atascocita Fire Department’s Emergency Management Team, where I helped develop a local disaster-response organization known as the Community Response Task Force.
In 2012, my life took an unexpected turn. After experiencing two heart attacks at the age of 47, I entered a period of deep personal searching — seeking clarity about faith, purpose, and the nature of the Divine. That journey led me to the profound wisdom found in ancient Jewish texts. My studies reshaped my understanding of God and transformed the direction of my life.
I eventually retired from pastoring and began a modest study group of about a dozen fellow seekers. Over the past 13 years, that small gathering has grown into a vibrant global community of people — many of them non-Jews — who are drawn to the clarity, ethics, and spiritual depth of Torah wisdom.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is this: a life of service to others is the most meaningful path one can walk. But living that truth requires humility; ego must be set aside for genuine service to take root.
We are living in a time of extraordinary challenge and beauty — a moment in history filled with both uncertainty and opportunity. I believe wholeheartedly that the world becomes better when individuals commit to bettering themselves, and that transformation begins with a foundation of faith and the timeless wisdom of the sages.
NETIV exists to provide a safe, welcoming space for anyone who seeks knowledge, spiritual growth, and a deeper connection to the Divine. This is the heart of my story and the mission that continues to guide my work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Houston for a week, I’d make sure they experienced the full flavor of the city — and in Houston, that starts with the food. Few places in the country offer the same diversity, authenticity, and downright delicious meals you’ll find here.

Day 1: Tex-Mex & Downtown
We’d kick things off with classic Tex-Mex at places like El Tiempo or Ninfa’s on Navigation — staples of Houston cuisine. Afterward, we’d wander through Discovery Green and the Theater District, maybe catching a show or live music downtown.

Day 2: Museum District & Fine Dining
A full day in the Museum District is a must: the Museum of Fine Arts, the Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel — all unique, inspiring spaces. Dinner would be at Pappas Bros. Steakhouse or B&B Butchers for some of the best steaks in the state.

Day 3: Space Center Houston
No trip to Houston is complete without visiting NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Afterwards we’d grab seafood near Clear Lake — Tommy’s or Gilhooley’s if we’re feeling adventurous.

Day 4: BBQ, Breweries, and the Heights
For lunch, world-class BBQ at Truth BBQ or the Pit Room. Then a stroll through the Heights, checking out eclectic shops and local art. The evening would finish at one of Houston’s craft breweries like Karbach or Saint Arnold.

Day 5: Galveston Day Trip
We’d spend a day in Galveston enjoying the beach, Victorian architecture, and fresh Gulf seafood. Maybe dinner at Gaido’s, followed by a sunset walk along the seawall.

Day 6: International Food Tour
One of Houston’s superpowers is its global food scene. We’d do a culinary tour through:
Chinatown for dim sum or pho
Hillcroft for world-class Indian and Pakistani cuisine
Bellaire for authentic Vietnamese dishes
And perhaps end with a sweet treat at House of Pies, a true Houston classic

Day 7: Sports, Shopping, and Live Music

Depending on the season, we’d catch an Astros, Rockets, or Texans game. Then spend some time at the Galleria or CityCentre. Dinner at Hugo’s for upscale Mexican cuisine, followed by live music at White Oak Music Hall.
Houston is a city filled with energy, culture, and some of the friendliest people you’ll find anywhere. Whether you’re into art, food, sports, science, or nightlife, the city has something unforgettable to offer — and I love showing it all off.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our mission to create an engaging online learning platform for non-Jews has been greatly strengthened by the support of the local Houston Jewish community. The TORCH Centre and its rabbis have offered invaluable mentorship and guidance throughout the development and growth of NETIV Online.
Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe and Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe have devoted countless hours to teaching, advising, and shaping our educational approach—contributions that are foundational to NETIV’s success.
We are also deeply grateful to Rabbi Dovid Abenson, author of A Light to the Nations, whose insightful and lucid writings illuminate how Torah wisdom can transform both individuals and societies. His perspective continues to inspire and enrich our work.
