We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonika Wheeler-Earl and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tonika, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I originally came into this space through my love for performance, storytelling, and creative expression. But over time, I realized I didn’t just want to be a part of someone else’s vision – I wanted the ability to create and shape my own.

Starting my own business came from a desire to stop waiting for permission to create. I didn’t want to keep waiting for someone else to say yes to me being in their film, on their stage, or a part of their vision. I wanted to build something of my own – a space where creativity, storytelling, and expression could live freely.

BluLibra Entertainment started from that desire to create space not just for myself, but for other artists and creatives as well — through spoken word, film, live events, and visual storytelling. Over time, it has also grown into helping small businesses and nonprofits bring their brands and messages to life through creative content and video.

And honestly, it’s still becoming. I haven’t gotten it to where I know it can be yet, but I’m proud of what it represents. BluLibra Entertainment is being built with vision, faith, creativity, and the belief that what I’m creating has purpose — even while it’s still growing.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
BluLibra Entertainment is a multimedia company rooted in purpose-driven storytelling, helping brands, nonprofits, and creatives bring their vision to life through video content, creative direction, and messaging that connects and drives action.

I started in performance and expanded into producing short films, screenplays, and live events like concerts. That journey shaped how I create—I approach every project with a focus on story, emotion, and audience experience.

What sets BluLibra apart is intention. The work is designed not just to look visually strong, but to resonate—creating meaningful connections and delivering impact for the people and organizations I partner with.

The journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve built this while balancing full-time work and real-life responsibilities, navigating uncertainty, and growing without a clear roadmap. But those challenges sharpened my discipline and strengthened my vision.

Along the way, I’ve learned that consistency carries more weight than perfect timing. You have to trust your voice, stay grounded in your purpose, and build—even when things aren’t fully clear.

Now, I’m returning to my roots—expanding into more film, stage plays, and live experiences to create more immersive, culture-driven storytelling.

I don’t just tell stories—I create the spaces where people can feel them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Because I’m often between Dallas and Houston—and so many of my closest friends and family are in Houston—the city already feels like home. So if my best friend was visiting, I’d make sure they experienced Houston in a way that felt real, not just surface-level.

I had done the quick weekend trips before, but it wasn’t until I started staying and working there for months at a time that I truly understood why people love Houston. It’s not just a place you visit—it’s a city you grow into. The culture, the people, the energy… it reveals itself over time.

Houston is layered, but what stands out to me most is the Black experience within it—the range, the presence, and the freedom to exist fully in different spaces. You see Black excellence, Black creativity, and Black community in a way that feels natural and unforced.

It’s the kind of place where Black joy isn’t something you have to search for—it’s something you walk into.

That’s what I love—you can move between upscale spaces and deeply rooted cultural environments and still feel like you belong in all of them.

The week would start with food and vibes, because Houston does not miss when it comes to that! We’d hit spots like KISS Houston, Rockhouse Southern Kitchen, KNP Social, and The Red Rooster Houston for a mix of great food, music, and atmosphere—spaces where culture and community are felt, not just seen. For a night out, we’d definitely stop by Bar 5015, a staple that captures the energy of the city.

Because I naturally gravitate toward storytelling and creative expression, I’d also take them into Houston’s arts scene—places like The Poetry Lounge Houston for spoken word, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Project Row Houses, where art, history, and community intersect in meaningful ways.

Somewhere in between, we’d just ride through the city—no strict plans—because Houston is one of those places you feel as much as you experience.
I’d want them to leave feeling like they didn’t just visit Houston—they experienced the culture, the community, and the fullness of what the city has to offer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to the people who have poured into me in ways that truly helped shaped both who I am and what BluLibra Entertainment is becoming.

First, my late grandparents Clyde and Bessie, who instilled in me a “just do it” mindset – the kind of mindset that taught me not to keep waiting, but to move on what’s already inside of me.

I give love to my daughter, Kyia, for encouraging me to finish what I started, and my parents, for always encouraging me to write, create, and use my voice.

Honestly, my entire circle-family, friends, and community, especially those from Longview, TX, and my extended family through my husband. They have shown up for me in real ways. Whether it’s encouragement, advice, volunteering their time, or simply driving near and far to support BluLibra Entertainment events, their presence has never gone unnoticed.

I’m deeply grateful for my husband, Stacy, who always finds time to support my crazy ideas and bring them to life, and my dear friend Kier, who reminds me that it’s never too late and always seems to bring laughter right when I need it most.

And I absolutely have to shoutout to VZN, for pouring into me from the very beginning – back when everything was written on scraps of paper.

Each of them, in different ways, has helped me keep pushing, keep creating, and keep believing in what I’m building. BluLibra Entertainment may be my vision, but it has been nurtured by the love, encouragement, and belief of the people who have walked with me along the way.

And above all, I give credit to GOD – for planting the vision in me, sustaining me through the process, and giving me the grace to keep building what was placed in my heart.
