We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Blue and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Like anyone else with a creative mindset, going through life normally was never an option. I had no idea why anything I was trying to do outside of my dream ended up flopping. Working a 9-5 literally never worked for me, I wasn’t the college type—I’m not big on paperwork lol. And even though my parents are old fashioned, they never forced me to do anything I didn’t wanna do. They knew I always wanted to be a creative—it’s always been my passion. So when I’d come to them complaining about a job or whatever, they’d remind me of what I said I wanted to be. It let me know I never had to settle for the norm. It’s possible…I could be greater. I just needed that extra push to let me know and they gave me the “okie doke”.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a soul singer who sings based off experience and feeling. I want you to feel exactly how I feel in that moment. It doesn’t matter if there’s 2 people or 2000 people; you deserve the same treatment. When I’m performing, I want every man to want me yet every woman to be my friend—it’s something I learned a long time ago. I give every person in that space an intimate relationship with the song I’m singing. I’m hardly ever uncomfortable which keeps me humble and comes out as personable. So at the end of the day, I literally want everyone to win & be happy. That’s the type of singer I am—for your soul. I hope this all makes sense lol I’m most proud of the type of artist I’ve become today especially because we get so stuck on being perfect we miss the beauty of imperfections. We miss out on the awesomeness of something just being raw and simple. So much to the point where now, as a people we find simplicity to be a breath of fresh air as opposed to the norm. I embellish what some may see to be a mistake. I might mumble in a place where someone would expect to hear perfect diction. And I’m just comfortable that way. Was it easy? Heck no. You have to have tough skin because people have no filter. They won’t always understand your art. However, LIFE LESSON; no one can tell you how to interpret your artistry. Once I got past that thought—my ears are only my ears—the rest was a breeze. One thing that I’d love to convey to my fans or future fans or shoot, anybody getting ahead in life. That’s just be yourself bro. Seriously, it’s a job trying to be anybody else. People will love you most for staying true to YOU. Respectfully.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay so I’m from Wyandanch, NY however at this very point in time I reside in Greensboro, NC. I still have much to discover but so far it’s been a beautiful city. So if my homegirl came out, the first place we would go would definitely be Mimi’s or Printworks for brunch. There’s a ton of history here, we’d have to stop at the Civil Rights Museum (February One) where they held the sit-ins in the 1960s. From there we could take a nature walk in one of the lovely gardens—Bicentennial or Gateway Gardens. Stop by Four Seasons Mall, grab Cookout or Zaxbys to munch on. Go down to the restaurant district or downtown and take in all the street art/wall murals. Hit up Fat Tuesdays while the sun is setting then hopefully hit Elm Street Lounge for some live music or an open mic.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course without a doubt The good ol’ Page family had everything to do with my life. The support is out of this world and I don’t take it for granted. Outside of my family & church, there’s a few people I’d like to credit for always believing in me and taking the step further with ACTION; Walida Amin, Suntrana, Kojack Charles, Sid of The Superiors, Travis Ferguson, Shatonna Nelson, Jabare McKinstry, Shavar Horton, Sammy Miller, Bria Hunter, Aishatu Ahmadu and Jessica Little
