We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Mihaylova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, what’s the most important think you’ve done for your children?
When I became certified as Oncology Skin Care Therapist, my son was six years old at the time. It was when he learned about cancer. He came with me to several events related to my studies. He came up with the idea to let his hair grow for donation. My boy found the only way for him to help, he let his hair grow for two years, and then donated it. My career advancement was the cause of his noble act, and I know that this experience left footprints in him forever. This is collateral beauty.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Skin care is an important part of self care. It has to do a lot with giving time for ourselves, to feel and look better. Especially in these stressful times. Also, just like some people don’t feel comfortable with few extra pounds, there are people who have that same feeling, knowing that they have pimples on their face. It lowers self esteem. It is incredible how many aspects of someone’s life can be affected, due to acne problems. That is why I treat my clients as a whole person, not only their skin issue. This is why my clients always receive an honest consultation, that goes from the best facial I can provide for them, to nutrition suggestions, to research if needed. My treatments are not over when the client leaves. That’s only the beginning. My clients inspire me. They motivate me to never stop learning. I lost the count of my certifications. Endless times I have done a research and ended up recommending a product or service, which I don’t provide. Because this is what sets me apart, I care for each and every one of of my clients, even outside my treatment room. My honesty and my knowledge have been the most important tools in building my practice. It’s very rewarding to get a call from a person overseas, or a different state, who tells me that I was recommended by someone who used to be my client, when living in Houston. I think that, unfortunately, the beauty industry has become to a degree frivolous, and so much sales oriented. Most recommendations are made based on services and products provided, instead of the needs of the client. That is why I created the All Inclusive Facial. There are no add-on, no extra charges, instead, the client gets everything she/he needs at the time of the visit. From acne treatment, skin texture improvement, or even a fully relaxing experience. If there is one message my skin care practice wants to send out is that, skin care, as part of self care, should be a part of everybody’s life. And it should not be complicated.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I will definitely schedule her to have a facial with me, and a massage at Blossom Massage. At least one time I will take her to Ballet and Pilates by Victoria, for some girls work out day, in this unique place, filled with joy and wonderful people. On a Friday night, we are absolutely going to the Women’s Self Defense class at Revolution Dojo Cypress, with Professor Gabriela Ceconi. Girl power in the house! I am taking her to the Powder Keg, this wonderful outdoor place with beach volleyball courts, dog park, tacos and drinks. If my dear friend Juliette Kobani is teaching one of her cooking classes, we are going to that. I am taking her to MOD Cafe all the way in Galveston. Their cortado is worth the drive. Smither Park. You gotta see it to believe it. We are not missing the Ren Fest in October-November. One in a kind. For some good juicy burgers, in an authentic Texas place, Clay’s Restaurant.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is an interesting question, and for some reason, lately I think about it a lot. You know, both of my parents are between the bests in the world of what they did. They were in professional sports, gymnastics to be specific, and it was almost like the word give up, had been surgically removed from their mentality. Also, back in the day in Bulgaria, where I am from, it was almost embarrassing not to read, not to want to improve whatever skills you have, or to lead a mediocre life. And combine that with being a generation X, where we had to do things on our own, I grew up in an environment where people were thriving. Then and now, I am surrounded by people who push me to be better. I am a true believer that when one works hard and smart, opportunities will come. But in my career as an skin care therapist, I owe my success to my clients. They are the ones who continue to trust me with their skin needs, and to recommend my skills to others, for about seventeen years now. Each and every one of them inspires me daily. Serendipity was a major factor too, that involves my good friend and fellow esthetician, Patricia Garcia. I went to esthetics school because of her. I am lucky to be a part of the Blossom Massage family, where true talent is supported and encouraged. The founder and owner of Blossom Massage, Ilan Feld, and his wife, have created something I had never seen before. Opposite to other places in the field, where therapists are controlled and told everything they have to do, in Blossom, the therapists use their talents and improve their skills. That is why there is so much diversity, and that is why the best of the best are part of the team. Big part of success, now days, is what you guys are doing. You reach out to the community and tell stories about people, who others get inspired from. Thank you for that. That’s why I always make sure to check your website when I am looking for a professional service, or a place to go locally.
