We had the good fortune of connecting with Quia Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Quia, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I disagree with the notion that job longevity is necessary when working full time. Past generations have valued working at one company for 10, 15 and 20+ years because it shows loyalty and commitment, but I believe that this ideal tends to trap employees in a company with very little growth especially as today’s employers look for experience and skill more so than how long one has stayed with a company. When I worked a 9-5, I wasn’t opposed to staying with a company long term if there was room for growth, a positive company culture, competitive benefits, etc. but the benefit of moving companies every few years is the ability to expand your skill set, understand how various brands and companies operate and the most sought after, an increase in pay. I am now a business owner but this was something I always challenged as an employee.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Code BLK is a new, Houston-based marketing and PR agency. We specialize in prioritizing diversity and social impact when it comes to our clients’ projects because we understand that target audiences are vast in race, gender, religion, abilities, socioeconomic status, etc. and we want to make sure we are doing our best to communicate to all. My business partner, Chynell Lee, and I have backgrounds working with large corporations such as Procter & Gamble and McDonald’s, where we helped manage and develop marketing campaigns and amplify various voices in the process.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I LOVE to eat so have obviously scoped quite a few restaurants in Houston! BreaKfast Klub BB’s Cafe Turkey Leg Hut Snooze Frenchy’s Chicken Shipley’s Black Walnut Bar/Food Present company Grooves Seaside Lost & Found
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to Aris Brown, Chynell Lee, Sofia Cacho, Ashlyn Alter, Rosaura Martinez – A few people in my life that have contributed to my professional growth and saw the powerhouse in me that I see in myself. Appreciate the support!
