We had the good fortune of connecting with Roxi Fam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roxi, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Growing up, I would always watch Michelle Phan’s YouTube channel on beauty and inspirational content. I felt like I had a “big sister” in her because she was so relatable. I have always loved beauty and fashion. I would also visit Wendy’s Lookbook blog website after finding her YouTube video on ways to style a scarf. Wendy’s fashion was so sophisticated and it allowed me to express my love for fashion whenever I could not afford to go on a shopping spree. I have always admired Michelle and Wendy but never thought that one day, I would become a content creator, myself. Due to my love of fashion, I thought that it was time for me to take the leap of faith and become a fashion blogger. I am so glad that I took the leap of faith as so many blessings have come from just believing that I, too, can do it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I was on the other side as an audience viewing a blogger, I always thought they were so lucky to wear beautiful clothes, dress up nicely to take gorgeous photos, and live such a dream-come-true lifestyle! I did not think about how much work it would take to get to where they are because I had no idea what all of the work entailed. It takes SO MUCH time, effort, energy, and work to be a blogger. Now that I am on the content creator side, I fully understand that it is definitely not easy! Being a content creator has stretched me so much outside of my comfort zone, prior to blogging, I was not on social media for over 10 years due to my struggle in the past from being bullied. I remembered the hurtful past I went through when I deactivated my Facebook account from high school and never looked back. I did not want a social media page and those who are in my circle of close friends have my phone number so they could easily reach out when they wanted to catch up. Social media was not something I felt like I was missing out on until I met a blogger in person and I was so inspired about building my personal brand, and that if others could do it, I could too. My close friends and husband were really shocked when I told them that I created an Instagram account @chicandlively because for as long as I have known them, I did not have social media. This is a different side of me that I am embracing and learning along the way, but I think it is so important to let the past go, let the feelings of hurt, betrayal, and those lies of “we are not good enough” go. I am here to tell you that YOU ARE ENOUGH. If I never believed in myself and still held onto the past, I would be too scared to start blogging. Still to this day, I am vulnerable when I put myself out there, but I know that one thing is for sure, if I don’t do it, at the end of the day, the only person who would live a life of regret would be me. I love exhortation and have been told that it is my gift. I also love fashion. So I decided to put the two together and exhort people through my love for fashion, building self-confidence, and sharing inspirational tips. It really makes me feel so fulfilled. I am so incredibly thankful for this blogging journey because, without it, I wouldn’t be able to face my fears head-on. For those who are reading, thank you for believing in me and in Chic and Lively.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Blogging has allowed me to venture out into the city of Houston and the surrounding areas more. I would definitely suggest the following places below. Places to eat: I am a lover of sushi, it is my all-time favorite food and the best sushi place I have tried thus far would be Sushi Masa 15253 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX 77478. They have an a la carte menu and a buffet option where they bring out the most delicious dishes! It will melt right in your mouth and just talking about it makes me hungry for Sushi Masa! A really cute place I would recommend for some girl time would be Sweet Paris and Nobibi. At Sweet Paris, you will find beautiful creperie specializing in sweet and savory crêpes, waffles, salads, hot drinks, and more. The interior design is very lady-like and I love the atmosphere every time I visit. Nobibi offers delicious ice cream and dessert drinks, it is also a very Instagrammable place for photos. Places to visit: We cannot forget about the shopping! I love to shop, affordably! The Houston Premium Outlet offers a variety of selections and you will get a workout in from all that walking! There is also the Tanger Outlet and Katy Mills Mall. I would suggest visiting The Galleria Mall as that is the most popular centralized mall in Houston and checking out The River Oaks District. There are a lot of stores surrounding that area as well as Highland Village! Places to hang out: I love watching movies and it is so much fun to hang out with my loved ones watching a movie unconventionally inside our vehicles with the screen playing directly in front of us and listening to the audio through the radio! A great place to visit for an unconventional movie night would be the Showboat Drive-In Theater.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so blessed by the behind-the-scenes support that my husband and photographer https://www.instagram.com/c.lifestylehouston contributes to daily. They have seen it all on my entrepreneurship journey, the pleasant joyful times, and the emotions behind it. Without their support, I would not be where I am today. I am beyond grateful to have such a loving and caring husband who is emotionally supportive. My photographer goes into great depth to create content that aligns with my personal brand and is always striving for creative ideas every time. I am just so blown away by his belief in me and creating content with him keeps me going. A big part of my journey has been an incredible experience due to the virtual Chic and Lively community https://www.instagram.com/chicandlively who has been there for me every time I get on Instagram stories and post content. I have had so many people reach out to let me know that they look forward to seeing my content, or that my content lights up their day, and it warms my heart so much! I truly cannot do this alone, and it is certainly all because of their love that I continue to strive for better each time I put out fashionable content. Last but not least, I am thankful to serve a God who is greater and bigger than all my fears and problems. It has been my prayer that He leads and guides me for His calling, honor, and glory.
