We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, how has your work-life balance changed over time?

When you’re a small business owner, it’s difficult to separate yourself from the business. You’re basically on 24/7, especially when you’re first starting. You have to be prepared to live and breathe it. As a one-woman act, I am the business: from buying, to curating, to selling, bookkeeping, social media, accounting, packaging, shipping, and all the other behind the scenes things that we don’t think about when we shop other small businesses. It is often difficult to create space for myself that doesn’t in some way involve the shop. More recently, I have found the importance in gifting myself moments to refocus and reset, which helps me in my personal life and ultimately helps the business. Yoga has been a long-time passion of mine, so I make an effort to practice at least three times a week. I also love road trips, so I aim for a few each year. Traveling is also a great way to seek out small businesses and local talent in other parts of the country. Balancing my personal and professional lives has been the most challenging and rewarding part of being a small business owner.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Nothing about being a business owner is ever easy. There are always daily, often hourly, struggles and challenges, whether you run a large corporation or a small restaurant or shop. The key to any business ownership is loving what you do. There is no way to be truly successful with any business, without recognizing and appreciating everything the business gives back to you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

The Shops at Broadway News is a must-stop destination. It’s the best, most unique shopping and food destination, where you’ll find Red Cat and Co., along with all our friends, including Grey Moon Vintage, Chictique, La Casa Frida, Bear Goods, Richter Goods, Lunchroom Anxiety, Tillage Plants, Travelers Barbershop, Mila Coffee, Flourpress Bakery, Don Raul Carnitas, Wild Barley Kitchen, Health Nut Juices, and Mister Diablo Taco Truck.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have had so much support from so many people and fans of the shop. I love and try my hardest to support all my friends with small businesses, and they have all been great to me. Honestly though, I have the most admiration, respect, and love for my customers. They are the most loyal, amazing, and unexpectedly awesome part of what I do.
