We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley McCown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think it all boils down to love. I love what I do and I feel fortunate to be able to share that with each and every customer. There’s a lot of love that goes into making every Good Witch Candle and I take time to ensure each one receives the same amount of intention, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail, even down to the packaging. I really believe that people can tell when you love what you do, and I think that’s the reason, coupled with sincere gratitude, that Good Witch Candles has been successful.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Good Witch Candles, we specialize in creating Crystal & Scented candles made with 100% Natural Soy Wax. We hand-pour each and every candle using the highest quality, eco-conscious ingredients, hand-selected crystals, herbs, and decadent scent combinations with one goal in mind: to create an uplifting, mood-enhancing, “Good Vibes Only” experience for our customers. As a business owner, I am most proud of the feedback we’ve received from our customers. Launching a business hasn’t been the easiest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s been one of the most fulfilling. I probably shot, and re-shot, and edited, and re-edited product photos for my website for months before I finally “went live”. I would probably still be editing photos if it hadn’t been for the encouragement of my loved ones and this quote from foundr’s Gretta Van Riel: “If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product; you’ve launched too late.” Those words, coupled with faith in what I’d created, were the motivation I needed to finally kick my baby out of the proverbial nest. Launching a small business during a pandemic has been a wild ride, but if you’re passionate about what you do, it’s so worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For favorite food spots, I’d definitely suggest Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar in the Heights (pre-pandemic and hopefully post-pandemic). Other Houston musts are Uchi (if you’re feelin’ fancy) & Yard House in CityCenter, which offers a vegetarian-friendly menu of personal favorites. If you’re looking for good people, drinks, music, & comedy: check out Rudyard’s. You also could never go wrong with a walk along Buffalo Bayou or catching an improv show at Station Theater.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First & Foremost – I’d like to give a big, ENORMOUS thank you to my loving husband and best friend, Bryce Perkins. He has been my biggest cheerleader and a huge source of support, love, encouragement (and patience!) on this journey. Second, my amazing friends and family that have been there from the beginning and supported me in so many ways – Heidi, Jenn, Ashley, Lilli, Amanda, Kayley, Aimee, Lisa, Brett, Denesha, Colin, Jordan, & my Mama to name a few! Lastly, I’d like to thank Jeff Standley & his Facebook community “DIY Candle Making Beginner to Advanced” for all of their advice, wisdom, and encouragement throughout this journey.
