We had the good fortune of connecting with Chukwunonso Ofili and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chukwunonso, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because it’s where my heart and interest gravitated to at a very young age. All my three older brothers were constantly drawing and all I ever wanted to do was be on their level ,that became my love but all of them stopped art after high school ,but at that time i had already falling in love with everything drawing and art related. My parents took education very seriously and expected me to come first second or third but I could never hit that goal so once my parents caught on that I loved art . I had to make a promise that as long as it was art related I had to be number one at all times. So that propelled me to seeing myself in this career. Lastly my art teacher in secondary school in Nigeria mr Olowo really put the stamp on me wanting to be an artist full time. I would often see him create portraits ,sculpt and create clothing and he would also let me help him and that was the epiphany.Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Ofilidesigns Art is centered around illustrating images of the Afrocentric culture that triggers conversation. I’ll say what sets me apart is my signature pattern I call LOOKU LOOKU which is an Afro cubism pattern. My journey to where I am has no solid direction as finding myself was the journey. 2010 started my clothing line WAHALA STORE, Then drawing pencil portraits in 2013 ,then did caricatures at the Houston zoo in 2015 that led to my inception of “Gele girls “ then in 2017 found my self . All that time I dabbled in logo and branding creation . My first art exhibition was 2017 when I chose to show the world my talent. All these skill and experience allowed me to become a full time professional artist with all these skills at my disposal. 2020 started working on murals in Houston and also Dallas. In all these experiences and experiments I’ll say it was a serious struggle because clients and interests were very hard to come by. The love of the work and the gradual recognition eased the stress tho. The same way we don’t know how food is always available for birds but God always provides is what got me through a lot of tough times because somehow some way God always provided that client or that meal.Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lol I’m such a home body this is a tough one! First of we going to a Nigerian restaurant preferably were my art is , so I can just be a tad bit boastful. I’m into movies so we definitely going to the movies we would watch like 3 movies back to back . The Art museum for sure, and definitely any other curated art experience is were we would go. Then I would feature my best friend in our comedy videos just for the fun of it so his family can call him in Nigeria and say they watched it a hundred times. At this point I just realized how I can’t make it to a week so I’m going to take this seriously and get a full week itinerary for next time smhThe Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to dedicate my drive to my teacher back in Nigeria mr Olowo and family My entertainment enlightenment to skribble kid media My entertainment group WOWO BOYZ UH NSA for being receptive to my creativity A lot more
