We had the good fortune of connecting with Retro Ka$hi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Retro, why did you pursue a creative career?
“I been in and out of studio’s practically my whole life and my big cousin had one that I used to sit and watch him do shit in like mix, master and beats. Most of my homies and cousins growin’ up was rappin’ and eventually they had me writing that stuff too, so then this girl Ashley made me record a song and then my homie Indra (Nos at the time) had me in the booth recording Netflix and I knew after that. I had to do music n shit” – Retro
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
“At one point before I really started rapping I tried to rap and some guys locked me out the studio and told me I couldn’t spit I’d never do numbers and I needed to quit. I think that put me into a position where I had to do things different and put me into another mindset on rapping and now I can jump on a song and make my presence known. We still don’t have very good equipment but we make it work with what we got. I’m just tryna make something shake before I turn 19 cuz’ I feel like I’m running outta time but I’ve made more progress in 1 year than a lot of rappers in multiple years so I’d say we on the right path.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It changes on if we in Chicago or in Minnesota but ima use Minnesota for this one. So food wise I mean we gotta hit the “Leaning tower of pizza” in Minneapolis shorty. That’s my spot I take people there a lot cuz I like the food in there, Moa (Mall of America) be bussin’. We got skateville if you into roller skating and stuff but really it’s knowing where the moves are that will have you wanting to chill in MN. Telly party’s or open cribs but that’s what be crackin’. Last I’d have to bring folks to the studio cuz’ that’s just how I am for real.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
“There’s plenty for real. My big cousin AP used to tell me I had a flow and should write my Raps. Ashley used to be on my ass bout’ jumping into a studio and then Indra had me recording Netflix and was the first person to make me think I could really do some rap shit like for real for real. After that this dude Yu$e found me and he showed me another side to this whole shit if it wasn’t for Yu$e my quality, production and overall music period would be like it was a year ago still even now. Yu$e made me think differently and now I’m bout’ to start shooting music videos and shit cuz’ of bro” -Retro
