We had the good fortune of connecting with Ksenia Kozhenkova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ksenia, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
It makes me happy to share my art with the world and see how people react to it. My recent series titled Infinite Possibilities is created specifically for that purpose, It makes you wonder, it challenge your imagination and therefore expands your inner world creating an emotional response to what you see. This emotional response is what makes me happy the most because after all that is why we have art. I believe that art can change the world and keep people connected especially during the times of pandemic that is happening now.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist and pianist, I create art in the same way as music is played, following the movement of a piece, defining the tone, and giving it a certain mood. My current work explores the connection between our inner and outer worlds creating a different emotional response in every viewer. My current work is done in “abstract expressionism” or also called “action painting’ style. Each painting goes through three phases before completion: creation, destruction, and recreation. Just as nothing is permanent, my art is a proof that everything is constantly changing and transforming, and even though it is, it is still all one and all is connected. It took me my entire life to get to where I am now professionally. It was a long journey and still is, that can be shortly described as a series of life experiences such as moving to another continent, discovering my true purpose and going back to the most natural form of expression which painting is to me. I believe that challenges are needed in order to grow, learn and expand. Expressing myself through art is the closest way I can show my inner world to others. You don’t need a language to understand art, there are no barriers, only freedom. That freedom of emotional response is available to everyone and in my art it is there for you to explore your own inner world and to connect it with the outer. My art has a positive vibe and healing properties, reflected in the frozen movement of mixed colors that represent our chakras. The healing happens not just through the colors, but also through the challenge of your imagination. It is like a play for your subconscious mind to seek and discover a reflection of your current state of mind, providing you with the answers and possibly messages from another dimension of time and space.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the Houston art district, starting with exploring Sawyer Yards art community with their opened art studios and Saturday Flea Market. After we would check the artsy coffee places and few bars in Washington Art District. We’d wonder through Menil Collection and Museum of Fine Arts to see some amazing artwork, followed by a walk in Hermann Park for a relaxing afternoon. I would show them the oldest bar in Houston, La Carafe and for the food, we’ll explore something new everyday because there are just too many good choices to pick from.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my father Konstantin Starinsky, an amazing person and musician who had encouraged and inspired me in my journey to become an artist. With the pandemic happening in the World, we had decided to work together from two different continents and create a collaborative online exhibition where we connected my art and his music in a visual/sound experience. The viewer will be able to see and feel the emotions caused by the healing power of colors and sound. It will soon be available for viewing online.
