Meet Kennisha Marshall | Balloon Stylist & Sonographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kennisha Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kennisha, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea because I love all things crafty and creative! I started doing decor for my family & my kids parties and I had a lot of inquiries. So God laid it in my heart to start an event planning business. I also have a career in Sonography so I had to cut back on the event planning, but it led me to focus on what I enjoyed designing most, BALLOONS! Balloons let you be creative & crafty all at the same time while still bringing joy to someone.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Distinctive Touch Designs does all things Balloons! I offer a variety of different balloon designs such as, columns, garlands, photo frames, bouquets, arches, mosaics, and more. I’ve been designing balloons for over 6 years which gives me the confidence to pull off any request! So like I stated before Distinctive Touch Designs started as an event planning business but I had to make some changes as my life changed as well. My career in Sonography & becoming a mother of 2 restricted me from fully pursuing event planning. So I had to rebrand and do what worked best for me while still enjoying the business. I couldn’t see myself still designing & not incorporating balloons so I decided to do just balloons & still be able to make a statement for people’s events. I was a little hard on myself at first not being able to do all I wanted and still am at times but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized I can’t do it all just as long as I do my best. It has taught me to focus better & be more creative! Balloon creations are continuously evolving and I’m so excited for where Distinctive Touch Designs is going!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a food lover so of course we’d spend most of our time at restaurants. Some of my fave places are Willie Gs, General Public, Union Kitchen, Lost & Found, Eddie Vs, Cyclone Anaya’s & any place with grilled oysters! I’m also always looking for a place to unwind & relax so I love to be by water and/or fish. We’d go to The Woodlands Waterway, Kemah, Galveston or Baytown Nature Park to name a few. I’m not big on crowds but I love to ride downtown, River oaks or anywhere with a scenery at night. Houston has a vibe of its own so no matter where or what you’re doing it’s always good time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my husband, Davion Marshall for being with me every step of the way for all of my career & business endeavors. Also, my parents, Kenneth and Davietta Hicks for instilling in me faith, love, & strength to pursue whatever my heart desires. My Grandmother, Ruby Lee McCrary for passing her creativeness down to me, she’s the main influence for the business. Last but not least, a big thanks to my family & friends that have supported me throughout the years!
