We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derrick, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Gary, Indiana to Annette Strong and Derrick Murphy Sr. Growing up seeing my mother work 3 jobs to make sure we had food, clothing & shelter is where my work ethic come from. Today as a family man, having a 9-5 career and being a successful entrepreneur due to my hard work is something I knew I could accomplish because I had a great example! Anything is Possible with Faith & Hard Work! In addition to a group of supportive people to help you along the journey of life!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
M.U.R.P.H. LLC (Many UnderEstimate Reaping the Promise of Hope) is an organization that provides tools and resources to those in need. More information on the company coming soon.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week long trip for my friend means that I personally have one day to connect with them due to the lack of availability I have :)!
First thing we would go to is The Breakfast Klub to eat, after our belly’s are satisfied then we would hit up the Galleria to explore the area plus the mall. If my friend really about that life, they would take a nap to rest for the evening :)! If that’s not the case, we would make time to record their fulfilled day on the podcast and end the night watching one of Houston’s professional teams play.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My ShoutOut is to my grandmother, Charlene E. Strong, the ideas the world has learned to know me as started with her and I having many conversations about me starting my own brand, being in the league and working with some of the greatest athletes and some of the most influential people in the world. Not once did she laugh at me or look at me funny, she continue to be there to lend her time and ear. It’s been a decade since her passing & her words of encouragement continues to play a part of my success.
A Fun Fact: My Grandmother & I loved the WNBA and she told me in 1997, “Don’t you sleep on their game, It’s going to GROW!”
I took that quote throughout my years while in high school, college and especially now that I have had the pleasure to collaborate with many women athletes including a few affiliated with the WNBA
