We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Muecke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always enjoyed being a creative person. I grew up a ballerina and also interested in fashion. I love the arts. Being a fashion blogger has allowed me to express my love of fashion along with seeking creative backgrounds for the pictures.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In 2011 I became a single lady and empty nester and was seeking a “second chapter” purpose. I knew that I wanted to do something new and different with this chapter of my life. I was now in my 50’s, so I was older and wiser, but still very young and had a life ahead of me. In 2013 I put this very notion out to the universe and people started asking me “what are you up to now?” and I would say “I’m not sure, but I’m working on it”. In every case people would reply “You should do something in fashion”.
Later that year I decided to start a fashion blog, Bethielife.com. I wanted to follow no rules other than I would do whatever i wanted. I started out with my own clothes in the back of my car and began shooting pics around Houston. Since then I have continued to showcase my own unique take on fashion, featured many backdrops around Houston and am blogging for stores such as Tootsies, Valentino and Saks Fifth Avenue. I also, for 5 years, included a Woman/Man Crush where every month I featured a high profile Houstonian with personal photos and interviews. This was a big hit because no one else was doing it at the time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a tough one, but I would start with our own Houston Ballet. They are the 4th largest ballet company in the country and my personal favorite. I have been on the Board for 21 years. We also have the largest number of theater seats outside of New York, so we would also go to see the Opera, Symphony, Theater Under the Stars, Alley Theater, Hobby Theater and Jones Hall. Next is our famous Museum District which includes the Museum of Fine Arts, Kinder Building, Museum of Contemporary Arts and many more. Nearby is Hermann Park, the Museum of Natural Science, the Houston Zoo and the Children’s Museum. Let’s then go shopping at River Oaks District and the Galleria. Let’s do some funky shopping in the Heights. A bike ride or walk along Buffalo Bayou. Time to eat! Houston has the best dining anywhere from our BBQ and TexMex restaurants to ultra fine dining! I would also take them to the Houstonian for a workout and spa day next door at Trellis. If we had more time, I would take them on an overnight to Galveston.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my supportive family, friends and the city of Houston.
