We had the good fortune of connecting with Charu Palkamshetty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charu, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Being a Mother and a Wife, it is very important to be balanced, does not work all the time but it does most of the time. My first priority is my family, I take care of my family first and then start my work which helps me to be more focused and stress-free. Earlier to having my business I would cook or attend to my family anytime but now, I make sure I finish all my work by noon and start my work. If my work is more detailed and needs more attention, I do so at night, when the kids are off to bed and my kitchen is closed for the house. My music, my hot cup of tea, and my work… solace 🙂
It is very important to be balanced, it helps your mindset and your day revolves around it. If I am balanced, everything around me works out well, if I am stressed, nothing goes well.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My baking, let it be cookies, cakes, or even cupcakes is all about being creative. The taste of my products is very important along with visualization. The right balance is the key! I love to see how flavors come together to make the final product.
What sets me apart is the combinations of flavors I use in my cakes, it is a fusion of Indian and Western. I take the time to make my clients happy, a little extra goes a long way. If I can put a smile on my clients just by seeing my creation, I know I have nailed it.
Honestly, baking picked me. It all started in December 2020 when I started baking cookies for my kid’s teachers (credit for teaching me was Kristy Kelly and Chelsea, my neighbors). I posted my creations on my Facebook and that stirred. I started having multiple people requesting cookies and I said No as it was just recreational. After several more requests, I thought, why not, let me give it a short. I did and here I am now. I started with cookies, then cakes and cupcakes. Was it easy… hmm anything new takes time, and effort more than anything courage. With wonderful people around me, I had the courage to explore out of my bubble.
Lessons learned along the way was, never give up. You will never know until you try. You may fail the first few times, but then you learn a lot along the way.
My creations are based on my client’s important memories they make with their family and friends. It is important for me to listen to their requirements and make them happen so they can capture those memories forever. For me my family, my kids are the world. I love making memories with them. Dolci Treats does just that, it’s about sweet memories, with sweet treats.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, that is a tricky question for people here in Houston, TX (haha). Houston is a Foodie city, if you like to eat then yes ma’am, eat all you can!
If my best friend had to visit me, we would never leave the house, too much to catch up. My backyard is my resort, we would just hang by the pool, cook what we want at the outdoor kitchen and make smores at the firepit. (Do we still need to go out??;)) We would talk about my good old days and how silly we were and incidences that occurred in the past. The important thing is that we are together and having fun.
A week-long trip would be going on a cruise, it is all there, more than anything NO TECHNOLOGY. The itinerary will depend on the cruise.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have my kids (Rishabh, Sidhi, Aryan) and my husband Srinivas who have always supported me in my journey. My Sister Melveena and my friends, Vanshika Vipin Varma and Dallendyshe Webber who supported and believed in me no matter what.
