We had the good fortune of connecting with Meg Ellis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meg, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is essential for the mindset of entrepreneurs — a huge part of being “entrepreneurial-minded” is overcoming the fear of risk in order to achieve your desire. When I contemplating quitting my 9-5 job to pursue the life I wanted, I read Tim Ferriss’ “The Four-Hour Work Week. Tim breaks down how to go after what you want — basically, imagine the life you want – the absolute best-case scenario – and rank it out of 10. (For me, my “Something Better Life” was ranked as a 10.) Then you analyze the risk – what do you need to do in order to go after your best-case scenario and how workable is the potential outcome if it doesn’t go as planned? Rank that too. (For me, the risk was quitting my 9-5 to focus on my dream, and the “worst-case scenario” was just going back to a similar job if things didn’t work out. I ranked the risk a 2.) The last step is comparing the reward to the risk — why was I risking a 10 for a 2? I quit my job the very next day.

Since reading that, I view risk differently and it’s not so scary. My own life coach says, “Everything is workable!” And you know what — it really is. She has helped me see that the ‘worst-case scenarios” we make up in our mind are very unlikely to happen, and even if they do, they are still very workable.

What should our readers know about your business?
Phoenix 8 Consulting offers Enneagram-based coaching for entrepreneurs, professionals, leaders & teams. Together, we identify and overcome challenges not just from a business aspect, but also from a personality perspective. The Enneagram is a personality test rooted in spiritual growth — it brings awareness to our core fears and desires, habits that we’ve created to mask our fears, and triggers that keep us from personal development.

It also serves as a foundation to overcome all of the above along with professional hurdles that hold us back. Most consulting companies go in and analyze a business first. I do things a little differently — I analyze the business owner* first. (*or leader, startup entrepreneur, executive, etc.) I specialize in Vision — curating a solid game-plan for professionals to actually achieve their dream. I use the Enneagram to navigate how to get there by first understanding themselves, breaking out of bad habits, and instilling a mindset for long-term success and growth. Not only does this save a substantial amount of money wasted, but it also saves years of spinning around in circles repeating the same problems. Develop yourself first — then develop a game-plan for success.

The most important part of a business is the people — so I begin there. I offer coaching for individual professionals as well as for teams. Understanding team dynamics and offering solutions create team cohesiveness & efficiency and improves productivity & morale.

It’s been so rewarding to see people invite vulnerability into their space in order to really grow themselves and their businesses. Encouragement and joy are two of my biggest values. I will always coach from a nonjudgmental place of safety with a goal to bring joy back into your business, self, and life.

I also come from a place of experience where I have felt the same emotions and run into the same walls in my own business prior to hiring a coach or understanding myself. I see very similar stories across the board in all genres of business — no one thinks they are worthy, no one wants to ask for help, and everyone thinks they need to know all of the answers. Helping people unlock why they believe this allows us to grow out of these patterns and achieve the life and dream they desire.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Anytime I have friends visit the city, our very first stop is SoulCycle in River Oaks! I’m actually an instructor there, and typically everyone who comes to visit is “strongly encouraged” to take my class. I absolutely love the physicality of the indoor cycling workout class along with the mental benefits it offers. From there, El Tiempo is always a must — especially if they are new to Texas! Superica, Ninfa’s, & Velvet Taco are also my Tex Mex go-to’s.

I live in the loop and like to stay pretty active, so the hike & bike trail is essential, as is a yoga class at Black Swan or a Lagree class. (Basically if you come to visit me, I will make you work out the whole time but will feed you tacos.)
