We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrence Ray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrence, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
The best feeling in the world to me is when I create something I didn’t know I was capable of. There’s been so many times where I’ve made a beat or written a song that I felt exceeded my expectations at the time. Also the same thing with videos and visual work, just being able to step back and say “wow, I can’t believe I made this” is the greatest source of happiness for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I think about my music, I think about the story of patience, endurance, and trust that’s allowed me to push forward and become the artist I am today. I had to trust my ideas, my abilities, and even myself to continuously push the envelope. I see myself as an artist that is vulnerable, inspired, and ready to share a piece of my story in every line and lyric – whether its an introspective song or just something to dance to. Early on in my music journey, I remember changing my stage name every few months and that really only came to end this this year when I finally settled on my legal name Terrence Ray. Today, what I’m most proud of with my music is that everything is complete organic to myself – the lyrics, the brand, the videos I create, and the overall look and feel I share with the world. Everything I do is a true and honest piece of me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite parts of Houston is definitely the museum district. I’ve been to every museum so many times on the free days that that part of the city is almost like home to me, especially Glassel School of Art. Whenever I go down there I always get inspired and I also love how the trees look around there. I have a thing for greenery so whenever I’m looking for a place to take pictures – the museum district is at the top of my list.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One person that I credit in my story as a creative is my friend Zackery Wells (or Z-Wells). I remember when I first got into music I didn’t know a lot about songwriting and beat making but he always encouraged me and saw something in me. I have to shout him out because sometimes I think about how easily he could have overlooked me at the time, but instead he’s helped me realize my potential and together we’ve grown so much as artists.
