We had the good fortune of connecting with Tahrin (Tina) Siddiqua and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tahrin (Tina), what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My husband and I jointly decided to start our own practice. We wanted to practice patient centered medicine where we put quality patient care first. I love practicing medicine and did not want a large company dictating how many patients I needed to see and how much time was allotted for each patient encounter.

Private practice is a rarity and I knew it would take a lot of hard work and commitment to establish a thriving practice. We didn’t know anything about starting a private practice, we basically learned as we faced challenges.

I have an open mindset and was willing to learn and be challenged. I love challenges. Anything worth having in life is always challenging.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
More about our business: I am a pediatrician and my husband is a family medicine physician. Together we created NW Cypress Pediatrics and Family Medicine, a patient centered private practice where we can take care of the entire family.

What sets us apart/proud of: Private medical practices in general are unique. Due to rising healthcare costs, big hospital organizations have been taking over smaller practices and driving them almost into extinction. We are even more unique because my business partner is my husband and we’ve continued to remain happily married for 15 years with 2 daughters while maintaining a successful private practice for 10 years.

Challenges: Aside from the challenges of starting a brand new practice (building the location, hiring and training staff, credentialing, marketing, etc.), we knew our greatest challenge would be raising our children correctly while giving birth to a new clinic. We moved to NW Houston from the medical center to be closer to my family. Building a practice from the ground up (zero patients) while having a toddler was difficult and I relied heavily on family to care for my children while I put in long hours into the practice.

Lessons: One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that there will be lots of reasons to quit. So many things will go wrong and will continue to go wrong.

I always come back to my “why”. Why did I start this journey of wanting to build my own private practice? I love being able to make connections with my patients without any administrative staff dictating how many I need to see or how much time to spend. I love my autonomy- I have been teaching fitness classes for 20 years and private practice has allowed me the freedom to continue to teach and expand my formats (Certified in all types of barre, pop pilates advanced instructor, kickboxing, kettlebell, zumba, etc.). I love expanding my knowledge, I have grown more interest in obesity and treatment of obesity and continue to expand my medical training in this field.

I try to keep an open mindset. When faced with challenges, I try to find opportunities for growth. Our practice has evolved over the past 10 years due to solutions created when faced with challenges.

You can never go wrong if you have the right intentions. My patients are my priority. We have almost entirely grown our practice due to our patients referring their friends and family.

It takes a TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More)! I realized early on that I cannot do it all, and I cannot do it alone. I surround myself with good people who want to make a difference in peoples’ lives .

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Herman Park, Moody Gardens, NASA (because you just have to when your’e in Houston), Museum District, Galleria, drive around the medical center, LifeTime Ftiness Cypess- lets work out! Love all Mediterranean foods (esp Kasra and Bijan), the Chocolate Bar in Rice Village has the best ice cream, and we always have to take a trip to my mom’s house- for the best food!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people! My mom and brothers raised me since my father passed away when I as 2 years of age. They modeled hard work ethics, altruism and keeping family first. My sister and mother helped raise my daughters so that I could complete my education and build our practice. And my husband/clinic partner continues to support my dreams and yet keeps me grounded so I don’t float out to cloud 9!
