We had the good fortune of connecting with Enaj B Da Light and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Enaj, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from New Orleans Louisiana. I came to Houston as a result of the storm in 2005. My family was already planning to move but hurricane Katrinanoushed is out quicker than we expected. growing up in a lively city such as New Orleans has given me so much musical influence and inspiration and continues to lead me as a strong force in my artistry.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I know what sets me apart from other artists is the ability to be spiritually in tune with everything around me. I find myself talking to trees, bugs, my higher power and myself a lot. As I grow a closer connection with myself I am ultimately able to use my spiritual and psychic connection to flow through my music on the spot. I’ve learned that though I know I am unique, not everyone is going to value me though. I never worry about who does or does not value me because I’ve learned to value myself. The world must hear the words that I have. I am a doctor, not just a singer or artist. I heal. I repair. And I build. Though I am strong, I am sensitive and I must be felt. I am a spiritual being having a human experience and I aim to paint that experience with my gift and then heal the traumas and weak spots and wounds of the collective by way of music.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being that I’m here in Houston, if I had someone visiting I would say we’d have to go to Houston Sauce Co. I love their plant-based selection of food. It’s the bomb, literally. If we’re talking fun then I’d say Buffalo Bayou Park. I don’t like to always be around a lot of people so the park is a way to be isolated but still out and about with others. And there’s a bunch of dope chill spots there, food and art pieces in the park that I admire. I like to go biking there sometimes too. It frees my mind.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sister and my home town, New Orleans.
