We had the good fortune of connecting with Jan Pomeroy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was in junior high I had an art teacher Mr Rooney that really inspired me. From that time I couldn’t think of anything but to become an artist. I was an art major in college and continued to take various art classes to develop my skills and apprenticed under several artists to learn cloissone’ enamaling, fiber art techniques and mixed media techniques. It was just a natural progression for me to make it a business since it was my passion and desire to develop and grow as an artist

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right now I am doing smaller mixed media pieces that bring hope and comfort to people because of the COVID-19 PANDEMIC. I have been doing mixed media painting for a long time-15 years. I do like variety so I have been doing some fiber art again-journal covers & book covers and some bags and have done a little stained glass. I do like to work with found objects and add them to my paintings. I do some assemblage work as well. This COVID thing has hit artists hard -all my spring shows were canceled so no sales except for a few on the San Marcos Art Center online gallery and some from my other online stores. Nevertheless, I will always do art because it brings life into a space-it can change the atmosphere, heal and touch people in a deep spiritual way. God has guided me through this art journey and I know that it is part of my destiny to fulfill. My quote “It is an amazing thing to produce a painting that someone is drawn to and has a deep emotional response to it. Art brings life to people that they may never encounter otherwise. Art is healing on many levels-spiritual, emotional, physical.” Jan Pomeroy What sets my art apart is that it is God Art-the Holy Spirit guides me and it is kissed by God to touch people in a certain way that is life giving and healing. I use the mixed media because of the possibilities and experimentation that can happen with it. I use non-traditional techniques to get non-traditional results: textured canvases, found objects, metallic paints with patina, foil, art papers, acrylic paints, gouache, pen and ink, and more.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
The place my friend would be staying is the tiny house across the street from me. First I would cook my friend breakfast-Sweet Potato pancakes (gluten free) with Maple Syrup and fresh blueberries and strawberries. Well I live by the river so first we would go kayaking on the San Marcos River all morning long. Then to the root cellar for lunch-near the square in San Marcos. For the next day we will be going trail riding with Maverick Horse back riding. It is an experience where we get to know the horse-an all immersive experience with our horse. In the evening we will be going to the Cheatham Street Warehouse to hear some live blues music. For the next day we will have a day long painting experience by yours truly-learning mixed media techniques at my house studio where I will provide lunch -salad with grilled shrimp, cheese, arugula, radishes, sweet peppers, sunflower seeds, and dried cranberries and homemade yogurt dill dressing. And that is just the tip of the ice berg…..

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The various artist groups I have been a part of and some individual artists have really been encouraging to me: CAS-Creative Art Society in Austin, TX-especially Jane Fier, Leslie Kell, and Shruti Mehta. The Thornton Road Artists (where I used to have a studio-Rita Ross, Mindy Graber and Rick Van Dyke. Currently I am in Maxwell close to San Marcos and a member of the San Marcos Art League and Kathryn Welch and Cecilia Wibbenmeyer. I am so thankful to each of these artists that have really been encouraging and supportive of me as I pursue my art endeavors. Some of them have mentored me in how to hang a good show-a big shout out to Rita for that! My daughter Sarah Brannon has been a big inspiration to me and even has brainstormed with me on my art business!
