We had the good fortune of connecting with Sir Matheus Edralin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sir Matheus, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Other than deciding to work for myself, the single most important decision I’ve made was working ON myself. Coming into my second year of working on the brand, it’s been a lot more difficult than I expected. Some call it sophomore slump or some may call the first one a fluke. There were few times were I doubted my timing, designs, and overall execution. I quickly realized that I was losing track of my purpose. I started entertaining distractions and letting my ego takeover. I’ve decided to take a step back and take a break from dropping collections for about 6 months. After my collection En Route, I prioritized my mental health. Really dug deep and tried to know myself better. I started going to therapy and sure enough my Doctor diagnosed me with Anxiety. We tackled self esteem issues as well. I was in therapy once a week for about 5 months. I recently got discharged this month. This made me realize that I was using my brand as a coping / defense mechanism. I started using it as an escape because deep down I didn’t like who I was. I liked who street aura was but I didn’t like who Sir Matheus was. That had to change. I have to step away from the brand so I can lay better foundations. I started taking care of myself better. I’ve started picking up hobbies that I didn’t know I enjoy such as : Reading, taking care of plants, working out, and other self care routines. As a result, I’ve became a better man and I truly believe that it will translate to being a better brand. With a stronger foundation and purpose, Im looking forward to emit the same energy through my releases this year. My first drop will be H.omestreet Spring Summer 22. This is my prelude to my campaign this year, Pis Aller. Pis Aller – French term for “Last Move”, will feature our first Cut and Sew RTW pieces. Overall, the intention behind this project wouldnt be full/genuine if I didn’t decide to work on my overall self.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At heart, Im a Visual Merchandiser. Always have and always will. I see things in a different perspective and Im able connect with people subconsciously through my merchandising.
I started with Zara now I worked for the biggest fashion house Louis Vuitton. The ride hasn’t been easy of course. A lot of times it’s stressful but the love for fashion overcomes that stress. When I run into challenges, I ask for help. I understand that no man is an island. I understand that I have a great team and mentor around me. I ignore my ego and ask help when needed. I also practice it. Every single day, I try to merchandise something even if it’s a small wall or area then I ask how I can improve. I learned a lot of lessons and still learning a lot of lessons. Not letting your ego get in the way, learning how to receive feedback, being open minded, not being scared of making mistakes, most importantly have fun.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Shoutout Houston Texas!! Each day of the week will be different areas. Since I live by memorial / Katy side, I think I’ll start there. Katy has a great Asia Town and also La Centerra is pretty dope. Next day will probably be City Center / Memorial Mall Area and show them Social Status and might take them to get pluckers. Following day will be Kirby Area, Prolly get coffee at A Ma Maniere. Might go to Galleria Mall as well and show them my work place. Next one will be Heights. There’s a lot food spots there so I can’t even name one. But I will take to Nollege Tx, it’s a cool streetwear store right on I-10. Museum District and Rice Village would also be a cool place to show them
As far as night scene, I’ll take to the usual spots : Washington, Midtown, Heights.
Notable Restaurants : Soju 101, Kura, Rakkan Ramen, Gen, Los Tacos Food Truck, A Ma Maniere, Breakfast Klub, First Watch, MAD, Toute Suite
Notable Stores : Louis Vuitton Men’s , A Ma Maniere, NollegeTx, Faculty, Social Status, Premium Goods
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, God. Everything I do, I have to do it with his Guidance. I trust Him and His timing all the time. Secondly, my family has always been there for me. My mom, dad, my sisters, are always supportive. Third is my inner circle of friends. They’re always there to give me honest feedbacks and immediate support. Family and Friends are very empowering. I also want to give a huge credit to my therapist. She helped me opened my eyes and truly believe in my work. In addition, my mentors at work have always pushed me to be better every single day. There are also people that I follow and study such as Virgil Abloh, Rhuigi Villasenor, Jerry Lorenzo. These guys together with other fashion / industry personalities have paved the way for us.
As far as books, I recommend 4 : 4 Agreements, 5th Agreement (Mastery of Love), The Alchemist, and The Archer.
