We had the good fortune of connecting with Aasir Mecca and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aasir, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by the future; I live and do all that I do because I genuinely believe in creating a better world. I know my actions now will make way for my posterity to do more and go higher. I go by goat, which means greatest of all time. Still, I know the knowledge and experience that I gain through my life will give my children the opportunity to be greater than great. I also gain inspiration from my contemporaries; as long as I have others driven to excel, I will do the same. Appreciating the brilliance of others cultivates the brilliance within and allows one to transcend limitations.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started rapping in January 2020 because I wanted to be heard and taken more seriously as a creative. Before rap I focused primarily on poetry which garnered me the respect of people at local open mics but the effect wasn’t lasting enough. People would leave the show and even though they may have enjoyed the performance most people would not commit the ideas to memory. I wanted to make music because I could put it on streaming services and people could essentially listen forever from wherever. I am very proud of my content because it is geared toward the Liberation of all oppressed people. My music is honest I tell my story from my perspective without excessive hyperbole. I got to where I am by committing fully to myself and choosing to remove archaic ideologies that no longer served the person I am. It was not easy in fact I went through many periods of spiritual and mental turmoil that sent me to the bottom of an abyss of anguish. When I was going through these periods I maintained that if I am at the bottom I can only go up and so I’ve risen. Spiritual and mental growth are unique to each individual so approaches to health vary but commitment to bettering oneself should be the primary focus. I believe in unconditional love as a result of my recent believing in a higher power. Previously I was an atheist but my connection to the creator has made an immeasurable difference in my approach to the world. I want the world to know that I go by goat and mean it I was meant to be.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would go to Mo’ Better Brews for some Vegan food of course Twisted Grilled Cheese is a must as well but for all my meat-eaters out there Rays BBQ is always a hit. House of Pies has never disappointed off food alone but as the name might suggest they are known for their desserts. If my friend or anyone had never been to Texas at all I feel obligated to get them some Whataburger just off the strength but with all the great places around the city Houstonians have almost no need for fast food. Houston is also home to some great parks and wooded areas as well Lake Houston Wilderness Park is an amazing getaway from city life and pace if even for a little while so we would definitely have to go out there as well. I am a frequent flyer at The Local Seat as well they have an open mic, karaoke night, game night, and the music is always good so we would go there at least once. I like this place called Bacco it’s like a house where people can congregate they have open rooms with seating and tables, they serve pizza and alcohol and people are free to play games and mingle as they please. Seating is available indoor and outdoor. I attend Texas Southern so I would likely give them a tour of the campus and surrounding areas to give them a glimpse of what student life has been like for me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my entire community, from my family and friends to peers and acquaintances; every interaction I have had has contributed to where I am. I am the sum of ALL my parts, so regardless of how close or distant I am from someone, I am eternally grateful to have shared space with you and grew from that experience. Also, shout out to everyone in the struggle; we are at a critical juncture in time. The days of our detriment are numbered, so we must face adversity with courage and overcome it.
