We had the good fortune of connecting with Curtis Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Curtis, how do you think about risk?
In my life, I’ve learned that the biggest rewards come with the greatest risk. I think a lot of people spend their time avoiding risk because they’re trying to avoid failure, but they don’t realize that the greatest successes come on the other side of big risks. I encourage everyone, especially younger people, to take as many (calculated) risks as possible.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My brand is Black Tie Watch Co. – based in Houston, TX, we are a modern, minimalist men’s accessories company that provides quality watches and bracelets at prices that won’t break the bank. I began Black Tie out of my home in 2019 and have built the brand into one that has been shipped & worn around the world. We have shipped our pieces to 37 countries and our working on continuing to expand across the globe!

Was it easy? Not at all, I started Black Tie having never started a business before and was basically learning everything as I go. To this day I’m still learning things as I go! But that’s how I think everyone should approach challenges – do your research, plan out the steps ahead and take action. You’ll never be 100% ready for anything so start as soon as you can.

The main thing that has brought the brand to this point is me being consistent. There are definitely days when I’m not motivated to produce anything, but I know if I don’t show up then then the business won’t move forward. Most people think they need motivation but what they actually need is discipline. Showing up, being consistent, and making small incremental progress week in and week out for 3 years is how I’ve gotten it to this point and I would guess that if I can stay consistent the next 3 years will be even better.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a week long trip, I’d definitely say check out some of the parks – Herman Park has some nice, chill vibes and it’s right next to the zoo. For late night restaurants if you’re looking for something fancy, I’d suggest Peli Peli or Eddie V’s. As far as things to do there’s a bunch of different entertainment centers, bars, arcades, and a lot more.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am thankful for my brother Cjay Brown who connected me for this interview and for his support through my life.
