We had the good fortune of connecting with Hassien Muhammad and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hassien, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As a young coach, my perspective and views were impulsive and short tempered. I had zero tolerance for players who did not exercise what I perceived to be common sense.

What has changed is my understanding of patience and discipline, which is the foundation of my balance. Being recognized by the community as not only a coach, but a father figure, counselor, guide, and one that offers insight—you have to possess the discipline of patience and not react off of emotions alone. Also, I know the reality of poverty and how it affects families in day-to-day life, so maturing in patience has fostered my balance tremendously. Community leaders have an obligation to be mindful of interactions with our people, and I have embraced my position in the community and applied my knowledge of balance while teaching others. You almost have to have a true understanding of psychology, but that is for another interview.

What does balance mean to you?
Mentally, I think balance is a tangible scale of your brain. When you have one side of the scale disproportionate to the other side, I view it as being unstable— not able to rationalize, make decisions or respond in the proper manner. One must have balance and patience when teaching and directing individuals.

Tell us more about your career and what you can share with our community.
I am a healthcare professional, serving the mental health community for over 10 years. I previously worked with the neurological and rehabilitation population, and was often praised for my gift to connect with patients and their families at bedside. Understanding whole health healing starts with mental wellness. And, I transferred to a mental health unit to further utilize my knowledge and guide patients toward better outcomes. What sets me apart from others is I have been trained on how to give perfect redirection and I often counsel players when they are imbalanced or stressed. I am most proud of the growth from individuals that I see around me and the standard they hold themselves to. I achieved my professional goals from education, maturity, and growth. Of course there were challenges along the way, however my perseverance assisted in my overcoming the odds. I want the world to know my brand stands on respect, discipline, and mental toughness.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them to?
First, we would stop by Minute Maid Park to watch Altuve, shortstop for the Houston Astros. Then, we’ll watch the young, vibrant Houston Rockets basketball team. Lastly, we’ll visit the NRG to absorb the historical Oiler Blue Pride with the Houston Texans!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All praises are due to God for the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan for being a great example of how to carry and conduct myself as an upright Black man.
