We had the good fortune of connecting with Nayeli Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nayeli, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As my small business grew, taking risk was something i’ve had to put myself to do. One of the ways taking risk has played a role in my life is by investing in my business. For example, overtime i’ve learned that in-able to successfully grow my business i have to put money back into it, often times when investing the profits made from my business it can be a risk because of the probability that you won’t make the money back or your launch/projecting won’t be successful. Although i personally belief that taking risk in life is beneficial for one’s success in learning new skills, accomplishments, and self confidence, and not to mention especially when it comes to my own small business! Nevertheless nothing would have been possible without the people who support me by buying my accessories. Seeing people around the world love what i do gives me motivation to keep going. When customers place an order some will often times send me dms or emails when they receive their items expressing their gratitude and how much they love their new accessories. Thinking about how my creations can bring people joy keeps me going. It’s encouraging to have a group of people that support and love what you do.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Something i’m most excited about my small business journey is for what awaits me in the future. Having the opportunity to run my own business at such a young age often has me thinking about my business success in the long run and the new goals/opportunities i could potentially reach. Another thing that’s exited me about my future is making my parents proud, and one day be able to give back to them for all their sacrifices, and hard work they’ve conquered in their journey, and none the less for always being my #1 supporters & motivators. Although having a small business at such a young age is a true blessing, it isn’t always easy the first year i was truly lost in how to successfully promote, find a niche, how to profit off accessories etc. Since being creative and making accessories was always something i loved doing i never let myself gave up. How i got to where i am today is due to my determination, consistency, and patience. When i started selling accessories i never saw it as a “job” but more of a hobby, in result i never felt a rush for my small business to “blow up” or go “viral” i was simply just doing something that brought me joy. Up to date i’ve never seen jewelry making as a “chore” or a “job” which i have to say is the best part of doing what you love as a business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is such a big city with many fun attractions to explore. I like visiting parks, libraries , museums, thrift stores, restaurants, and coffee shops in the area. One of my favorite local parks is the Wheatland park, is such a beautiful small park, perfect to go on small walks or simply sit out enjoying the view while getting some fresh air. Although a park i enjoy visiting in the city is the Buffalo Bayou park, it has many near by attractions that you can explore and a beautiful view at the city’s skyscrapers !
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My small business success and where i’m at today wouldn’t have been possible without the support for my parents. At the time i was interested in starting my small business i was 13, I had discussed to parents my interest in jewelry making, and potentially starting my own business. Without a doubt, both my mom and dad encouraged me and that same week they bought me a few supplies to get me started. Ever since then it’s been a roller coaster! Although nothing would have been possible without their immense support in my creativity and always believing in me. I know my own self doubts and know if it wouldn’t be for their encouraging words i wouldn’t have got to where i am today. Im extremely thankful for my parents, for coming to this country with nothing but always working hard, to give me everything. Their hard working ethic is my inspiration. My parents definitely deserve recognition for my success throughout my small business journey.
