We had the good fortune of connecting with Steph Hausman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steph, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
The quote that’s been my guiding light over the past few years is “the best is yet to come.” This mantra enables me to feel positive and confident even in tough times. It’s a reminder that there’s better days ahead.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
If there’s anything the pandemic taught me, it’s that you can’t map out your life. I graduated from college in 2020 and had a rude awakening that the path I had envisioned myself setting out on was not going to pan out. I wanted to live abroad for a year and had been accepted to several fellowships. Then, I wanted to live in LA, work in entertainment, maybe go back and work abroad, and eventually make my way back home to the NYC area. None of that happened.
When my senior year was cut short, I stayed in Syracuse with my friends until our lease ended and moved back in with my parents in Connecticut the day before my virtual graduation. I struggled to find a job; I felt lost.
However, after finally finding work at an interior design studio and settling into the realities of my new routine, I began to really tap into my creativity in a way that I had never had the time to do before. Every night after dinner I would retreat downstairs and paint. I found my grandpa’s old camera collection and got really into film photography. My friend and I started a podcast. I started making earrings out of resin.
Fast forward to August 2021: I moved to NYC with my 2 best friends from college, found a job in entertainment like I had always dreamed of, and had acquired a whole new set of hobbies and passions.
Now, at the end of 2022, I feel at peace with not knowing—or planning for—what the future holds. I work hard during my day job and even harder on my side hustles selling my artwork and freelancing for brands (shameless plug @the.haus.shop & @shaus_photography). I’ve learned to take things day by day, because the best is yet to come 🙂
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since my best friend from high school moved there, Houston has become one of my absolute favorite places to visit! I have an upcoming trip planned for this November and we’re going to NASA which I’m pretty psyched about.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I was 10 years old, my graphic designer and hip-Brooklynite grandmother gave me Photoshop to play with…I guess that’s what Gen Z toys have evolved to. Having access to this powerful program prompted my passion for all things digital and design-related from a very young age. Without my grandma, I wouldn’t be the artist that I am today. Getting to grow up around her creativity inspired me to pursue dual degrees in advertising and marketing at Syracuse University. Now, I work in television as a digital content creator and freelance for brands, developing their social platforms.
