We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca “Miss Malik” Malik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca “Miss Malik”, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My balance has always included productivity, but I went from being super productive to ultra productive. Before, I would work my 9-5, then exercise, then do something just for the fun of it ( that is if I wasn’t cleaning).

Now, I work my 9-5, exercise, and do something to push or build my brand (again, that is if I’m not cleaning)!

I always think to myself, “Wow!” What if I would have been this way before? Instead of going out to bars I could have been building my brand years before this… how much further would I be? Ultimately, though, I believe I have been led to this point behind a level of maturity that just organically kind of happened.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to express myself based on imagination. I don’t always put things on paper. Mostly. an idea sparks, and within my imagination, I build on the idea. It may just be a concept. I don’t plan on when to grow the idea, I allow it to grow when it’s sparked again. So the idea may be in my mind just chillin, and then one day I hear or see something that sparks it, and my intuition tells me to water it.

I am very proud of my actor’s resume thus far on IMDB. I’ve acted in a few local films and it feels amazing to see myself on a site where big name actors are displayed.

I got to this point by just putting myself out there; finding gigs/rehearsals, applying, attending…through that naturally came networking & the power of social media which is a true networking platform.

Being creative is easy because it’s fun and fulfilling. Being physically tired from responsibilities outside of creativity makes it challenging but not impossible. I’ve learned to not under rate myself, nor allow disrespect. I’ve learned not to internalize hurtful things photographers may tell you. Confidence & self knowledge have helped me overcome the challenges: understanding myself and knowing who I am.

I want people to know it’s okay not to just be one way. Creativity and self expression cannot be simplified and shouldn’t be put in a box that u check off.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Discovery Green, especially at night. The energy is always joyful and the blend of plants & the buildings really set the tone just right for any occasion.

Doshi House has great coffee, tea and food. The environment is very welcoming and free.

Café Mawal has the best hookah and great food. The backyard is welcoming and comfortable.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God, Allah is given the greatest thanks for blessing my spirit with a care free nature.

My daughter has been the biggest motivation for me be larger than life itself. She reminds me to think twice about everything I do just by simply existing. Her creativity inspires me to continue expressing myself.
