We had the good fortune of connecting with Roz Jones, M.Ed. Exercise Physiology and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roz, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
I could go on in detail with what makes me happy, but it could be summed up into great experiences! Experiences introduce me to new perspectives, life lessons and the importance of gratitude. Experiences of deeper than surface conversation, experiences of being present, experiences of traveling and learning of a different way of life and experiences in trying new food truly make me happy. Why experiences? I feel a deeper connection with life itself. In regards to my fitness career path, seeing a client progress and experiencing a moment of accomplishment with a client is by far the best feeling of happiness and it’s true, I cry in excitement with them. All the emotions come out and I am not ashamed of it:)

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What’s my work? What’s my work as a Fit lifestyle Innovator? My career in fitness has evolved in how interaction, training and education has been delivered but the goal has always been to help the busy, health conscious individual manage a fit lifestyle through activity, adventure, and mindfulness. What I am most excited about is launching fitness programs to the digital world (via my app) in efforts to reach more people in their homes, business or on the go. The new program is called “Home Bodies” and includes expertly times interval and exercises through the week that incorporate strength, cardio and the always neglected component of fitness, flexibility in 45 minutes or less a day. The difference with my app is that it’s still personal! Meaning an athlete is guided through the experience of workouts and check-ins by myself, the creator of the program. This allows athletes to ask questions, send videos and communicate in real time with a professional. Of course COVID has allowed me a lot of time to delve into the research required to launch a program, but the highs and lows of starting something new have been there. I always say, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you” and this couldn’t be more true than now.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oooh, this is fun and I love being host. Ill assume it’s not the hottest part of the year, so assuming it’s February or March and the weather is perfect. – Workout at SPENGA – Lunch on the patio at Local Foods – Shower and take a bike tour through the city starting in Third Ward, to East Downtown, Midtown and cruising down the bayou. We would of course stop along the way to take in the art, murals and beauty of Houston and of course tacos from Tierra Caliente or Velvet Taco. Big difference of authentic versus what I call “designer tacos” from velvet. – Depending on how we felt I would either cook or order Indian from my favorite Indo-Pak restaurant, Himilaya. – Then head up to the Rooftop theatre or showboat. – End with a nightcap at Axelrad.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Let’s see, to start from the beginning, shout out to my Dad for introducing me to group fitness and gym life back when I still had to be in daycare. I’ll never forget seeing the group fitness instructors, imitating their movements from the window and thinking they were the coolest people. Fast forward to college and shout out to Sheldon Tate (now Intramural Director at TCU) for the casual introduction to the University of North Texas Fitness Department director. This one introduction is all I needed to break into the fitness industry and be one of those “Cool Ladies” I saw from childhood. Anneke Miller believed in me enough to take over a step class in less than 3 weeks:) Shout out to one of my biggest fitness professional mentors and she may not know it, but life mentors as well, Sarah Jordan at the University of Texas. Hook “Em. Sarah taught me a compassionate way to lead, educate and instruct while I was in graduate school. And although we kept much professional, she also just spoke about navigating life with balance, dropping nuggets of knowledge that I still live by today! Shout out to the team and FIT(ish) Travel Adventures (Trisha LaCoste, Duy Ta, Megan Geist) and every amazing soul that has attended and literally brought about a renewed sense of self with every single adventure. Each one of the attendees that have a special place in my heart. Shout out to SPENGA for allowing to develop in area of fitness I have dreamed of, developing instructors to impact more lives. Shout out to my close network of friends, Pamela Lott, DeDe King, ACCEL Lifestyle and so many more that push me to be my best.
