We had the good fortune of connecting with Abbey Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abbey, what do you attribute your success to?
Moxie District 31 is a place known for super cute clothes and trendy jeans, but also a place where every person is warmly welcomed with an atmosphere of fun, laughter and true caring. Our customers feel confident and gorgeous after getting their own personalized shopping experience. Sometimes, people come in just because they are having a bad day and need a safe haven and a place that will boost their mood. We love to work with each client who walks through our door, whether it’s an outfit for a special occasion, or a gift for a friend.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Located at the corner of Space Center and El Dorado, Moxie District 31 is a boutique where we help women feel confident in a fun and comfortable environment. While we are known to carry the best denim on the planet, we are also exclusive for lines such as Julie Vos, Sofft Shoes, our District Leather line, and our Black Label Collection that features local, hand-made accessories. We also carry Criquet and Horn Legend polos for men!
Before Hurricane Harvey hit, my business partner and I started Moxie District 31 with the goal of having a second income and fashion trucks. She would have her Moxie truck in Denver and mine in Houston. But our plans were put on hold due to repairs to our home after the hurricane. April 2018, I officially launched Moxie District 31 online and in my home. Never did I expect what happened next. The first week in May, I was called in early to write a press release that the hospital was closing. I was almost eight months pregnant with Sebastian. Quickly shifting gears, I immediately became a marketing consultant for hospitals, home health agencies and any other business who could use my help. A friend who owned a lash studio offered some of her space for me to bring in some clothes to sell to her clients in Kemah. I could work on my consulting work and sell clothes at the same time with my little baby in tow. Moxie District 31 started to become well-known in many of the events around the area, and then we started looking for a place where Moxie District 31 could grow and expand in our own space. We ended up in the Kroger shopping center next to El Dorado Mexican Restaurant with a short-term lease that quickly turned into a long-term lease that took us through COVID-19 to today.
Our goal at Moxie District 31 is to help women feel gorgeous and confident in a fun, comfortable environment. We take pride in knowing your name when you come in the door, and helping spouses and children find the best gifts. Some of the best compliments we’ve received have been about cancelling Stitch Fix to visit Moxie to someone who walks in 20 minutes before a wedding and needs an outfit. It’s most fulfilling to develop relationships with women of all ages and help them be comfortable with trying new things. It makes my day when a school-age girl comes in looking very reluctant about clothes, and then comes out of the fitting room with a genuine grin exuding confidence.
Moxie District 31 is involved in many Non-Profit organizations and community events, such as the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Lunar Rendezvous Festival, HLSR NASA Fashion Show, and Pampered Pink. We have events scheduled monthly as a give-back events for other local charities and groups, and we are thrilled when a group of ladies wants to have a birthday party at the store.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend comes to town, we will spend a day at Space Center Houston, and then head down Galveston for a day or two on the beach eating lots of seafood. We would spend a day at Moody Gardens, too. We would have to eat at Main Street Bistro in League City for their amazing asparagus and burgers. We would do a spa day at Woodhouse Spa, go shopping at Moxie District 31 and eat dinner at the Don’Key Restaurant. We would re-live our memories skating at Fun City Sk8 in Webster. To finish off a fabulous week, we would relax by the pool and soak up some sun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband has encouraged and supported me without waiver, always having my back.
