We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Faust and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
You don’t need a plan (right away anyway). I did start with a business plan. However, the more I planned and read about starting a business, the more mile-wide holes I found in my plan. So I did what any naïve and optimistic person does: I stopped planning and started doing. When you start a business, you get figuratively punched in the mouth daily, and a plan is just not very applicable in the beginning. I have a plan now. I have a vision statement, values, and annual goals. I’m all in on that stuff now, but I wasn’t then. And it’s a good thing because I never would have started. It was better that I quit planning the business than quit the business.
What should our readers know about your business?
We believe that when you have fun you do good work, and when you do good work you have fun. We actually founded our company on that principle. We weren’t sure at the time if that would work, but so far it’s working well. We created 5+8 because we believed we could do it better. We make beautiful things and tell true and compelling stories. We want to be the best agency in the world. We don’t see that as unrealistic; we see it as a challenge. Our tagline is smart work for cool clients. You can’t do smart work without cool clients. We’ve tried. To make this relationship work, it takes trust. If we trust each other, we can build something truly extraordinary.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to shout out my pops, Tom Faust. I’d also have to call out Brenda Love, the founder of Love Advertising and someone who shared with me how to run a company with empathy and compassion.
