We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrienne Hoffman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adrienne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For my full-time job, I am a respiratory therapist. I work hand-in-hand with doctors and nurses to take care of patients in their greatest time of need and, although difficult, I find it very gratifying. My dream job though, is to be a wife and mother, and when the time comes, I want a job to do in the home, while still being able to raise my children. Ever since I was a little girl, I would find drawing letters to be fun; instead of doodling, I would write words in fun ways. About three years ago, I decided to practice the art of calligraphy and that’s how Joyful Soul Calligraphy came to be.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The art of Calligraphy is one that is very time consuming and takes much patience to perfect. It requires a steady hand, knowledge of angles and strokes, and which nibs work best with certain papers and inks. The greatest hurdle I had when starting my business was the fear of “what if.” What if I wasn’t good enough? What if a project didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to? What if I disappointed a client? But I quickly realized that I wouldn’t get anywhere if I didn’t just do it. Having this mindset has given me a great opportunity to partner with Brides of Houston magazine where they showcase my work to local brides and vendors.
Lastly, I want you to know that Joyful Soul Calligraphy is not only my business name, but it’s a daily reminder to myself, and hopefully now to you, that in every moment, whether difficult or pleasing, it is a choice to have a joyful soul. Spread the joy to those around you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My idea of fun is anything outdoors! I’m a girl with heart for nature, so we would do things like hike or kayak at a nearby state park, go biking another day, and relax on the beach with a Whataburger meal and shake in hand to watch the sun set.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout, however cliche it may seem, is true nonetheless. I recognize that my success in life is because of my gifts and talents given to me from God. I realize that not everyone has the patience and ability to do what I do, and for that, I am blessed. My parents, family, and friends have always been my greatest supporters in my endeavors and they also take part in my success as a calligrapher.
