We had the good fortune of connecting with Akela Woodard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akela, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite affirmation is, Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts, by Winston Churchill. This quote reminds me that both success and failure are temporary. What truly matters is the resilience to keep pushing forward, no matter the outcome. I like it because it encourages persistence and reminds me that setbacks are just part of the journey. It inspires me to stay focused on my long-term goals, and to keep improving even when things get tough.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey to where I am today has been shaped by hard work, determination, and a clear vision of my future. Deciding to pursue two degrees simultaneously at Prairie View A&M and Texas A&M School of Law wasn’t easy, but it was a challenge I knew I could overcome. Balancing these programs requires discipline, time management, and resilience. The road hasn’t always been smooth I’ve faced moments of self-doubt and obstacles along the way, but I’ve learned that persistence and a strong support system are key to success.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that growth happens outside of your comfort zone. By embracing challenges, I’ve not only gained academic knowledge but also personal strength and adaptability. My story is about defying expectations and setting higher goals for myself.

What I want the world to know about my journey is that it’s possible to dream big and pursue multiple passions. My brand is about ambition, resilience, and the belief that with hard work, anything is achievable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the Houston area, I would make sure they had the best time ever by creating a week-long itinerary packed with the city’s unique vibes, food, and fun spots.

Day 1: Arrival & Dinner

– Dinner at Gloria’s – Start the trip off with delicious Latin food at Gloria’s, which is perfect for happy hour. We’d enjoy their flavorful margaritas and signature dishes like pupusas.

Nightcap at Bar 5015 – After dinner, we’ll head to Bar 5015 for drinks. It’s a lively spot with a great ambiance, and one of my favorite places to hang out. The mature crowd here adds to the exciting vibe.

Day 2: Exploring Downtown
– Breakfast at The Breakfast Klub – Famous for their chicken and waffles, this spot is a Houston favorite.
– Discovery Green & Museum District– We’ll stroll through Discovery Green, followed by a visit to the Museum District to see the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Museum of Fine Arts.
– Lunch at Rouxpour

– Rooftop drinks at POST Houston – In the evening, we’ll head to POST Houston’s rooftop park for a stunning view of the city.

– Breakfast at Common Bond Café– We’ll grab coffee and pastries before heading out for the day.
– Shopping at The Galleria – Spend the day exploring Houston’s largest mall, The Galleria.
– Dinner at Pappadeaux– Seafood lovers will love this spot for classic Cajun cuisine.

Day 4: Day Trip to Galveston
– Morning beach trip to Galveston – We’ll take a quick drive to Galveston for some beach time and stroll along the historic Pleasure Pier.

Day 5: Houston Heights & Night Out
– Breakfast at Snooze: An AM Eatery– Start the day off with creative brunch dishes.
– Afternoon in Houston Heights – We’ll explore the Heights, filled with unique shops, art galleries, and murals.
– Dinner at Gringos – Finish the day with Tex-Mex at Gringos, my favorite restaurant for a casual happy hour.

Day 6: Sports & Art
– Morning at the Houston Zoo – A relaxing walk through one of the country’s best zoos.
– Lunch at Ninfa’s on Navigation – We’ll have classic Houston Tex-Mex for lunch.
– Catch an Astros game– If it’s baseball season, we’ll head to Minute Maid Park for a Houston Astros game.

Day 7: Sunday Funday!!!
– Never leave Houston on a Sunday! Houston has the best Sunday Funday, and we’d finish the trip in style at Bar 5015. This is the perfect spot, especially with its mature crowd of 35 years and older, to wrap up an unforgettable week.

From the fun energy at Bar 5015 to the delicious meals at Gloria’s and Gringos, Houston offers an endless variety of experiences for every type of traveler.
