We had the good fortune of connecting with Andy Nolasco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andy, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love all forms of art the creativity, imagination and difference in perspectives it’s captivating especially music, but you hear the stories about people being exploited for there work and never seeing a dime for their creativity. That was a driving force on pursuing my own record company to have a safe place where all artist can have full creative control and not have to worry about being taken advantage of.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my business with a mindset of having the artist shine in there own light no filters no gimmicks to provide an environment and mindset that they can be themselves and have their music represent them. Making sure they own their masters while being transparent in all aspects of business. The thing I found funny is what set me on this path was a series of bad bosses while working during my last few years in highschool .I developed the mentality that I didn’t want to work for anyone but myself, but one day my counselor asked me what I wanted to do after highschool realizing I had never given much thought to it I started reflecting on what I truly would like to do. I didn’t want everyday felling like “work” so I asked my self what I truly love come to realize it was music all my best memories have had music involved in one way or another regardless if it was a band,DJ, or just the radio playing it was always music. Wanting to be apart of truly making music I signed up for an audio engineering classes twords the end of my senior year, and never looked back but kept the mentality of surrounding myself with driven passionate hard-working individuals with a love for music while simultaneously growing my skill and knowledge base slowly growing over the years untill I finally found and formulated a team with a desire to spread there art and message. Don’t get me wrong things we’re not always smooth sailing iv had people try to take advantage of the welcoming environment trying to get everything they can to benefit themselves. While also struggling with the choices of should I do what’s best for me know or in the long run sacrificing personal events from birthdays, baby showers, vacations and fun nights going out all for the growth and betterment of my business. Through all that what kept me going and help me overcome every challenge/setback was the vision of changing the cliche that everyone in the music industry is only looking out for themselves and is ready to get one over on artists. While truly giving the artist the credit, recognition, and capital that all artist truly deserve for their creativity and craft. Over the years you get a certain amount of wisdom from everything that has happened. What I have learned is believe in yourself!! Let nothing and no one dissuade you from a passion, goal, dream or anything you want to do in this world. Also keep your circle small with people you can trust with your life because trust is everything in anything you do, and never sign anything without reading it! Heart Break Records is about giving artist the environment to be themselves giving the tools for artist to home their craft without any censorship full artistic control. About love respect helping those that need the help and looking at ourselves and those around us with a mentality of unity and peace. To never give up and to remember follow your love, passion and not just focus on money.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m the fall season definitely wurstfest a celebration of german culture which there is heavy influence in San Antonio its just a 30 minute drive to new braunfels full of the best german cuisine from varying bratwurst and beers. Bliss restaurant the best restaurant in town hands down. The local pub crawl witch they do in different themes from 80’s night to onesies and everything in between it’s a giant event where they shut down most of the streets downtown allowing for a people to move freely in the theme of the evening making it for never ending fun. During the summer time the comal river nothing beats floating down the river with friends good beer and at the end setting up a grill for much needed food. Also a restaurant called Hot Joy a fusion of Mexican and Asian cuisine. The saint mary’s strip is a must on a Sunday a while street of different bars and themes from punk rock called Foust Tavern to more metal call the Amp Room as well as laid back spots like midnight swim to a more dance oriented like the gallery there is a place for anyone and everyone on the st Mary’s strip, and they have the best taco truck right in the middle of all the action. Finally the pearl district they turned an old beer brewery into a hotel making for amazing sights right on the river making the bar in the hotel amazing and the blue box that connects to it a real place to go with there house jalapeno shots to there collection of whiskey making it a top notch spot. Finally I’d have to say chichi birds hot chicken local chef who just got his food truck hands down the best chicken sandwich not only in town but I’d say in the country.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to say my friends and family starting with Reed Ahumada who always supported me from the very beginning and was the first to invest in my dream. My cousins Oniel Lopez and Allan Lopez they where a big part of helping me aquire the equipment and environment needed to flourish. Kaileigh Schweickardt helped me with logo designs and ultimately drew up my company’s logo and was big supporter from the start. My mentor Mark Sinko who helped me develop the skills and knowledge needed, the whole Heart Break Records family for always being there to not only work but have a team to lean on also my zocca family always helping out and supportimg any way they could from buying merch to simple words of encouragement and finally my parents for always keeping me grounded clear headed keeping things in perspective.
