We had the good fortune of connecting with Annie Strever and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annie, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I believe that would be my fearless pursue to find my true self, and to live the most honest life in terms of inner feelings. I was very unfortunate to be born in a Soviet Union where people have had a very tough lives and relationship with their true selfs. To say more there were no true self there, people for almost century were stuck in extremely bad politics. So I was taught to live some absolutely inhuman way. So by now I did a countless hours of therapy and self-development and never give up to get back to me, I always believe that there is a different way to live and enjoy your life, and that thought me that there is only one way to do so – find out who you actually are what makes you – you and what makes you happy and fulfilled. There is no other way to make those around you happy but became happy yourself first.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My favorite part about photography is to catch an authenticity of the moment, of the relationship between people or within person. There is some kind of magic at what I can freeze with camera. I normally not a big fan of props or posing. I prefer exquisite simplicity of the moment, to dive in in the depth of the soul. Sounds crazy, but it works all the time. I do a similar job to a therapist – first thing I need is to make my model trust me and feel safe and comfortable around me and my camera. Only then I will get the real true pictures that reflects their soul and authentic beauty! Love the process, love the magic!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m more a nature attractive person – I love cities, but don’t get me wrong I love nature more. So the first thing I would do to show my friends a unique Caddo Lake with the largest bald cypress tree forest in the world. With a short stop for Safari (Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari) on the way. Next thing would be Galveston trip for a bike ride on the beach.
Then Kemah Broardwalk.
And for last but not least of course The Boulevard Oaks to see those incredible ancient Oaks.
Herman Park, Buffalo Bayou Park and Rice University would be definitely on my list as well.
I also consider Houston Museum of Natural Science and The Museum of Fine Arts are both worth to visit.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For me it’s all about my Family and Friends. I would never be where I am with out there endless support of all my “crazy” choices in life. My first camera was bought by my boyfriend/friend/nowadays ex husband, and some of my pictures have been always on the walls at my other friend’s house. That all actually started as a million shots of my friends families and happy moments that I desperately wanted to save because of that feeling that we all are missing our lives not being in the moment and aren’t feeling it to the fullest.
