We had the good fortune of connecting with Baraka McCann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Baraka, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is so scary, it’s almost like your body/mind tells you not to do things out of the ordinary routine. Especially out of FEAR. We all have fears of failing, and the UNKNOWN. Actually for me, motivation videos on YouTube helped me TREMENDOUSLY. It motivates me so much to dedicate 30 minutes to a hour investing into my future, and my dreams. If I never took my leap of faith in myself, i wouldn’t be where I’m at today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I can say my career has been doing well! This year my goal was to start back modeling, but taking it more seriously. This year I’ve walked 3 times. New York, Orlando, and here in Houston in four months. I been very happy and proud to say I’m completing these goals.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is one of the most diverse cities in America, so trying different food experiences. We have so many festivals to try. My favorite one is going to a Jamaican festival. It’s so much fun learning about different cultures! We also have a lot of wine bars to check out! We also have a park called Discovery Green and it’s always a blast to go to!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I actually have a couple people to recognize. For one my mother really truly supported me in anything I’ve ever done. And to share a common interest and passion makes it even better. Every step from buying jewelry for me to have, to coming with me to New York Fashion Week to see me walk. I will forever be grateful and blessed to have a mother with so much grace, love you forever!
My second person I would love to credit and recognize is my boyfriend. He did not know that much about fashion, but was willing to learn for me. That alone made me happy, but to take a step further, he became my photographer and assistant over the years and learning about photography for me. Which had turned into a business of his own. I never had anybody willing to go out of the way for me on this level but my mom. So I will forever be grateful for him and love him forever.
