We had the good fortune of connecting with Belle Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Belle, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
To be honest, balance is a struggle. It’s one of those things you think you have figured out one minute, then BOOM, back to square one. When you are called for a gig/performance, sometimes there is no room for weighing out options. If you want it, you adjust and make it happen. It’s also important to me that I put just as much effort into my family, friends, relationships, and self care. I tend to stretch myself thin at times, but to be busy and booked is a blessing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional dancer, choreographer, and visionary currently residing in Houston, Tx. I have been a part of multiple dance companies and have been blessed to work with artists such as Marcus Addison, Sincerely Lenora, and most recently Tobe Nwigwe. Not only have I worked with so many amazing people, I have also directed/choreographed my own short film “Your Majesty”, presented my piece “Melanin Validity” at The Groundwork Choreographers Showcase, and co-directed/co-choreographed our 2021 show “A Year in Reverse.”

I feel what sets me a part from others is my work ethic. Being reliable and punctual has afforded me more opportunities than any audition, which is a blessing in its own.

Getting to this place in my career wasn’t always rainbows and fairytales. You literally have to work your tail off to make a name for yourself here in Houston. I had to start becoming intentional with my prayers and from there, doors I never imagined standing in front of opened. You have to take that leap, step into that uncertainty, and live the life you want.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Listen, its soooo many things to experience in Houston. Just know that when my friends visit, I wear them out. We literally stay on the go, HA!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Support is huge with me. HUGE. The support you get from people behind closed doors is what I cherish the most. God will always be at the top of my list. Next comes my parents. Im from Louisiana, which is where they still live. If I ask them to, they will drive to Texas at the drop of a dime for my shows. I also would like to shoutout Sha’net McCarter. One of my close friends, this woman has literally prophesied over me and my career. Has been my listening ear and voice of reason for almost every opportunity I have been blessed with.
